Spicy aromas of black and white pepper abound with a heady perfume of orange blossom, mandarin skin essence, grapefruit and melon with hints of apricot kernels. The palate is rich and full yet with an elegance and purity at the same time; this is portrayed by the ripe flavours of passionfruit, orange and honey which is complimented by white pepper and lime zest. The palate is rich and long yet perfectly balanced by the acid leaving ones mouth cleansed and refreshed, making another glass irresistible.
Intense aromas abound; vibrant cherry fruit with an earthy, savoury undertone, reminiscent of being in an underground, chalk cave. This delicious herbal complexity being the result of a high percentage of whole bunches in the ferment. Generous fruit initially on the palate balances the salivating, chalky, mouth coating tannins. Good acid levels also enhance the drinkability of this Pinot and its ageability. A complex style of Pinot Noir showing the abundant fruit of NZ combined with the robust tannins more typical of a Pinot from Burgundy. The fruit weight and structure of this wine will allow bottle development and ageing for the next 8 to 10 years.
Field of Fire is equally situated in clay lime-stone soils but with more clay than the Lions Tooth. The result is a fuller, fresher, more expressive Chardonnay. More intensity and yet more profound. Whichever way you want to look at it, it is a stunning Chardonnay that even though rewarding in its youth, will improve over the next 5-6 years plus.
The same principles of biodynamic viticulture, no filtration, natural winemaking, apply to the Earth Smoke vineyard as it does to the Angel Flower vineyard however the Earth Smoke is a heavier clay, with a denser, wild, gamey outcome. Earth Smoke is richer, more intense and fuller bodied displaying wonderful acidity and middle palate. Will also cellar very nicely for the next 5 years plus.
