Stunning soft and aromatic Pinot Gris, beautifully perfumed with essence of ripe pear, Turkish delight and a touch of honey suckle. Even though it is very well priced, you could serve it alongside a $25 Pinot Gris and it will compare very favourably.
Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc "Pioneer Block 2017
This is the “Foundation” release of Saint Clair’s Sauvignon Blanc which along side the rest of their releases is showing to be some excellent single vineyard Sauvignon. Pale straw in colour, this Sauvignon displays powerful and intense aromas of passionfruit, blackcurrant, hints of grapefruit and an underlying mineral note. This is an intense Sauvignon Blanc with a powerful spectrum and an underlying mineral tone. The palate is intensely concentrated and full with a long, lingering finish. Ideal with some fresh salmon or scallops alongside a lovely summer salad. Drink now or cellar for 2 years.

Another exceptional offering for this very much underrated producer, it came to us by accident trying some top New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and this just happened to come out on top. Fruity, flinty and aromatic, a barrage of gooseberry and lychee but dry with a lengthy middle palate, succulence and balance, what really good old fashioned Sauvignon Blanc used to be and the main thing really, all for $13.95. An absolute bargain!

Very few cases remaining of this lovely and excellent value Sav/Blanc, when it came to the crunch and the all important value for money it delivers hands down. Not just your usual grassy, semi-sweet run of the mill Sav/Blanc but a wine that truly captures the essence of Marlborough, lovely acidity, pungent with beautiful middle palate and concentration, very clean and generous also full body, classic Marlborough really. At $16.95 per bottle it is hard to pass considering the quality of many commercial ones on the same price bracket.

It's good to see that finally Pinot Noir winemakers in this country are waking up to the fact that not everybody wishes to spend $40-$50 to get a decent Pinot Noir. We were quite taken back by the quality of this wine, frankly we thought it would be between $40-$50 until we knew the price. It is a soft savoury and plumy Pinot Noir, in other words what Pinot Noir should be like. The 2013 vintage even though it was a good one, is ready for drinking now. Lovely cherry and soft plumy flavours, slightly savoury, well balanced oak and wonderful forrest floor characters. Having tried this alongside other Pinot Noirs at $30 let me tell you, it delivers! All of this at the price of $19.95.

With a little aging, this Sauvignon Blanc is becoming better and better. The 2016 vintage is perhaps the best up to date, it offers lush gooseberry fruit, lychee and green asparagus but it also has depth and length with good concentration and nerve. Made exclusively for Accent On Wine, at this price will give a lot of other Sauvignon Blanc at $20 a run for their money. Drinking very well now but will also cellar for another 2 years. Drink it with mussels, prawns or any shellfish.
