Chateau Villefranche is recognised as one of the oldest wine estates in the Graves region with the Guinabert family tending the vines since the 17th Century. Located near the Ciron stream, the estate extends over to the Haut-Barsac plateau and is mainly known for sweet wines. After centuries of making stunning Sauternes stickys Henri Guinabert decided to make his own red wine and so created this supple and fulsome blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot - fragrant and satisfying. This wine showes ripe red fruit, dark plum, vanilla, nutmeg and licorice on the nose and a palate that is rich, full of red berry notes and an excellent structure.
Who said Bordeaux's had to be expensive - you'll find great value in this AOC Graves red wine at just over $20.
“Single Barrel is a blend of six grape varieties: cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, syrah, rubin and mavrud. Curiously they make around 16 barrels of this wine each year. Dense, purple-hued wine that looks much younger than its age of six years. Rich, ripe and flavoursome red with a dense. almost chewy texture suggesting old vine material. Dark berry, wood smoke, old leather, tar and spice characters. An intriguing wine that’s clearly got plenty of life ahead of it.” 95/100 – Bob Campbell MW
“A blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot. Intense, bold red with Christmas cake-like dried fruit and nut flavours together with wood smoke, leather, cigar box. A formidable red with a powerful tannic backbone. Should age well. Slightly rustic. Drink: 2018 to 2025.” 95/100 – Bob Campbell MW
This is a well-balanced blend of traditional grape varieties consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. As the main variety, the Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine the classic elegance of the Lafite style, while the ageing gives it charm and a well-rounded character.
The nose is intense and expressive dominated by fresh fruit aromas of red currant and raspberry blended with subtle notes of oak. The palate is structured, round and easy, slightly oaked with firm but silky tannins and a long, fresh and fruity finish.
As is always the case with Pierre Lafon, not a man known for a lot of talking so he just lets his wine do it all for him. Most of you will be familiar with this stunning Bordeaux, one of the first imports of Accent on Wine over 20 years ago. A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, medium to full bodied with lovely lush and rounded tannins, concentrated and just beautifully balanced. For a Bordeaux Superior it punches well above its weight, it has power, concentration and depth with a lovely middle palate and beautiful finish. You could easily pay double for a wine of this quality. Drink now or over the next 5-6 years.
“An iconic brand meets a terrific vintage. The result is a “must have” wine for collectors and investors. This is elegance on a grand scale and one of the best vintages I’ve tasted. Still youthful and quite closed (it was bottled on the day I tasted it) but with plushness and power.” -- Bob Campbell MW, Business Desk, February 2021
Another single vineyard biodynamically farmed as is the case with the Malbec but this is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon at its finest. Ripe with hints of dust, blueberry and cassis with an enormous middle palate, ripe tannins and extremely long finish. Approachable now however this will reach its peak in roughly 4-5 years time and continue to improve further.
The so-called Sassicaia of Sardinia, made in collaboration with local Sardinian growers, is becoming a reference point for wines from this island and even Italy. Made from a blend of 85% Carignan, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. On the nose it exhibit spice, black fruits, game and hints of leather. The palate is superb, balanced, poised and full bodied with great depth, length and concentration. This is a wine that has the potential within years to rival Sassicaia itself but at a fraction of the price.
Chateau Loudenne Medoc is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc aged in French oak barrels for 12 months.
A wine of exquisite fragrance with blueberries, black plums, and cherries accompanied by subtle earth, oak, licorice, black pepper, clove, dry herbs and pencil notes.
On the palate it’s plush, full bodied yet smooth with medium acidity, fine grained elegant tannins and long finish.
This is a superb red Bordeaux from a great vintage.
Approachable now, will be magnificent in 3 to 5 years time.
Le Volte dell’Ornellaia combines a Mediterranean expression of generosity with structure and complexity, reflecting the philosophy of Ornellaia. It represents the first step into the Ornellaia family, and is an ideal wine for everyday enjoyment. Le Volte dell’Ornellaia 2018 perfectly reflects the characteristics of the vintage, revealing great elegance and balance. Its nose is wonderfully complex, very fruity with delicate floral and spicy notes. The tannic and smooth texture is striking on the palate, ending in a crisp and lively finish.
"A stunning wine, the 2017 Ornellaia offers a captivating interplay of richness and energy. Picking early was the key. Young vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc were harvested in August for the first time ever. In the glass, the 2017 offers up an enticing mélange of mocha, cedar, tobacco and licorice, with soft curves that add to its sensuality and allure. The 2017 is sumptuous and racy, as Ornellaias from warmer years tend to be, but it is not at all heavy or overdone. In a word: superb! Drink 2025-2042." Score: 97 - Antonio Galloni, vinous.com
A blend of Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon with aromas of roasted meat, saffron and game, full bodied with a beautiful silky texture, excellent middle palate and beautiful finish. An amazing wine, incredible value for a 9 year old Gran Reserva aged 3 years in oak and wonderfully matured, which really is the equivalent of many $40 plus wines. As Spanish wine expert John Radford wrote in Decanter, the tiny enclave of Campo de Borja is "the source of some of the best value wines from Spain, if not the world". It's true. Where else could you find such a grand, mellow, complex, eight year old, oak aged red at this price?
Awatea, even though being the so called second wine after the Coleraine, is still a wonderful Bordeaux blend that is able to age beautifully for up to 10 years. It always shows ripe blackberry and blackcurrant aromatics with elements of vanilla creme and sandalwood. On the palate there’s a banquet of plum, raspberry, dried herbs and lingering dark cherry, set out across cedar and cocoa powder tannins. Classical in structure, with fine balance and length.
A full and enticing nose of aromas; blueberry and boysenberry tempered by darker spice flavours of cocoa nib and black cardamom, add to that complex savoury notes of manuka bark and sundried tomatoes. The palate sweeps in with flavours of cranberry and a mineral sensation that lingers through the length of the palate. The tannins are ripe and balanced. An impressive release of this wine, delicious drinking now but with a concentration and structure that will allow this wine to further evolve.
