Spicy aromas of black and white pepper abound with a heady perfume of orange blossom, mandarin skin essence, grapefruit and melon with hints of apricot kernels. The palate is rich and full yet with an elegance and purity at the same time; this is portrayed by the ripe flavours of passionfruit, orange and honey which is complimented by white pepper and lime zest. The palate is rich and long yet perfectly balanced by the acid leaving ones mouth cleansed and refreshed, making another glass irresistible.
The Ungeheuer of Forst is one of Germany’s most famous vineyard sites. Riesling from here was poured at the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal in Egypt in 1869. The soil is based on sandstone with an ancient coral reef and volcanic basalt on top. Fermented and aged in 500l oak barrels for 10 months. Dry apricot, earthy notes, and a hint of smoke on the nose resolve on a palate that is balanced and lengthy, with a strong umami character to balance out the flinty minerality and extremely restrained stonefruit character. This wine explodes on your taste buds and remains there with a never-ending echo.
From vineyards on the plateau above Grainhu¨bel and behind the winery. Sandstone and limestone. 100% new oak fermentation. Ripe peach, papaya and apricot. Spicy, salty and creamy. Great acidity and lots of tension.
Von Winning’s GG (Grosses Gewächs) vineyard with the highest elevation, surrounded by Paradiesgarten. Light, sandy soil, cool afternoons and nights. Sandstone. Floral aromas and intense apricot. Very fine and elegant with great concentration and length. Fermentation in 100% new oak gives this Riesling a voluptuous character, with apple, hazelnut and spiced honeyed melon and citrus components. Very weighty.
“On the palate we see an equally gentle personality too. The friendly entrance builds rapidly with an effortless movement slowing down in the centre to add weight and focus through lemon flowers, lime juice and anise. The fruit intensifies towards the mid and finishes long with a precise and harmonious acidity, which gives the wine its “open” feel.
The wine is approachable now, but will reward cellaring for another seven to ten years.”
Very much made in an Austrian/German style with a little residual sugar, off-dry, but vibrant, fresh, full bodied with lovely acidity and minerality. Central Otago seems to be producing outstanding Riesling. We’ve tried this together with excellent examples of German and Austrian Riesling and it’s just up there. Refined, focused with lovely citrus flavours and able to age for the next 2-3 years plus, absolutely outstanding especially at the price!
In the last 10-15 years, Central Otago has surged ahead in the production of outstanding Pinot Noir, lately they have also extended their search towards Riesling. Mt. Edward is perhaps the best exponent of both in this area and their Riesling (whenever it is available) is a true revelation of what can be done with this variety. The 2018 vintage has been one of the best for awhile, having tried it a few months ago it was already showing a lovely floral perfume, great texture and perfect acidity, made in an off-dry style and not overly alcoholic it is outstanding in its youth but will also cellar for another 3-4 years. Without doubt one of the best Rieslings in the country.
