Padrillos Malbec 2016
Made by Ernesto Catena, the son of Nicolas Catena who pretty much single handedly put malbec from Mendoza on the world map. This is also from Mendoza, the ideal region to make Malbec, high altitude, natural irrigation from the Andes, hot during the day, hot during summer and cool nights. Full body and concentrated with great depth, lovely aromas of dark chocolate, blackberries yet with very suave and supple tannins and excellent length. Great with great steaks, grilled chops, in fact any grilled meats. Approachable now however drinking over the next 4-5 years.
Awaroa Requiem 2013
One of Waiheke’s top Bordeaux blends without doubt. Ripe tannins with aromas of dust, dry fruit and blueberries. Lovely acidity, perfectly balanced, focused and pure. Will cellar for 8-9 years plus.
Septima Obra Malbec 2016
Another clear example of why Argentina is producing the very best Malbec in the world. From Mendoza, a region situated at a very high altitude above sea level therefore producing very low yields and very natural wines. In the true style of Malbec, it has soft supple tannins with great concentration, minerality and high expression. The 2016 is another very good vintage even though vintages in Mendoza do no vary that much because of its topography. Excellent with grilled steaks, sausages and also pastas. Drink now or cellar for 5-6 years.
Septima Malbec 2018
Another example of what Argentina is doing with this grape variety, they really have become the masters at it. Even countries such as Spain and Italy where they are head and shoulders above the rest are finding it difficult to make wines of this quality at the price. A full body wine with intensity and power, yet very elegant and balanced, depth, structure, complexity, everything is here. Quite remarkable for a wine around the $20 mark to have so much on offer. An array of mocha, smoke and old leather with sensational middle palate focus and purity, it is the sort of stuff that you expect from something around the $50 mark. You’ll enjoy this, why bother with pretenders?
