  • Ata Rangi Celebre 2015 NZD $52.95 NZD $46.95
    110930
"Célèbre has always had its own distinctive style as a bright, high-energy red with real concentration and a rich, mouth-filling texture. As a young wine, the 2015 is showing abundant aromatics with ripe blueberry, boysenberry and red currant notes meeting more exotic notes of star-anise. Long, fine, savoury tannins across the palate and the bracken-like earthiness from the Cabernet portions builds complexity, while Syrah brings spice and fresh, balanced acidity to the finish. • Ma Maison Chardonnay 2010 NZD $52.95 NZD $46.95
    153295
This is one of the up and coming stars in Martinborough that has been able to capture the essence of true Chardonnay. For lovers of white Burgundy, in particular Mersault, you will find it very familiar. Made from a small holding of mainly Mendoza clone Chardonnay with an abundant aroma of white peach, melon and nectarine and left on its lees for an extended period of time but not stirred which gives it a bottle fermented Champagne character. Full malolactic is given to the wine with no fining or filtration resulting in a creamy, soft and well balanced texture with lovely acidity, focus and accuracy. Frankly one of the very best Chardonnay’s that we’ve come across in the last few years. Will also cellar for another 3-5 years.... more »
  • Simon Bize Bourgogne "Les Perrieres" Blanc 2015 NZD $52.95 NZD $48.95
    154810
2015 is becoming apparent that it will become one of the great classic vintages. This is beautiful white Burgundy, mineral, full bodied with hints of brioche, pure white cream and just beautifully balanced. It’s not an exaggeration that once you try this it will almost remind you of a junior Puligny Montrachet. We think that this is probably his best effort up to date! Will keep for 4-5 years.... more »
  • Simon Bize Bourgogne "Les Perrieres" Rouge 2015 NZD $52.95 NZD $49.95
    154811
This is the red equivalent and also the entry level for Simon Bize but it’s beautifully made, medium to full body with a lovely texture, dry herbs, hints of rosemary and lavender and for an entry level red Burgundy, it punches well above its weight. Again being that it’s a 2015, it helps because it was such a superb vintage. Drinking well now or over the next 5-6 years.... more »
  • Egon Muller Scharzhof Riesling Qualitatswein 2007 NZD $53.95 NZD $49.95 Out of Stock
    153152
Egon Muller is internationally known for producing cutting edge Riesling. This particular one is low on alcohol with outstanding minerality and purity. It is one of those wines that offers the best of both worlds, very attractive when youthful however capable of aging as well. Pure, expressive, lively and racy. This wine is very good value in that it is very pure and fine. 9.5% alcohol Pale of hue with gentle green hints; a warm and attractive nose, lazy spring blossom and soft green aromas, then, as is a characteristic of this House, a palate of great intensity and precision, slate and fruit from the lime grove. • Septima Noche Pinot Noir 2008 NZD $53.95 NZD $44.95
    153310
Septima Noche literally translated means Seventh Night. This is a deviation from what you would come to expect from Mendoza in Argentina where Malbec is the king. A robust, concentrated Pinot Noir that is probably more the style of a Burgundy than the Kiwi type, savoury and ripe with ample and rich middle palate, a beautiful expression of its varietal that will also cellar for the next 4-5 years. Something distinctive that you should make a point of trying.... more »

  • Marques de Riscal Reserva 2011 NZD $54.95 NZD $49.95
    153430
One of the legends of Rioja and one of the oldest Bodegas founded in 1860. Also one of the great pioneers of blending the local Tempranillo to other French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Marqués de Riscal epitomizes Rioja as being classical, elegant and timeless. Being a Reserva, by law, has to spend 2 years in oak followed by 1 year in bottle before release making it quite approachable and drinkable on release as one of the key demands of the Spanish market. The 2011 vintage is a superb year compromising a late hot Autumn with a very dry and warm Summer. Beautiful brick red in colour with a perfume of tobacco, cigar box, leather and roasted chestnuts followed by a full bodied palate of oak, vanilla and liquorice. Good purity, finesse and balance with outstanding complexity, depth and structure. Drink now or cellar for 5 years plus. ... more »
  • Mount Edward Pinot Noir 2015 NZD $54.95 NZD $49.95
    12029
The latest release from Mt. Edward that from humble beginnings has become one of the benchmark producers in Central Otago. The 2014 together with 2013, 2007 and 2009 are perhaps the best vintages since its insertion in 1997, founded by Alan Brady one of the pioneers in the area, the wine has been improving year on year which is not always the case for many other vineyards. This is one for the cellar, lots of ripe cherries, thyme and ripe berry fruits, but it is not all about just fruit, what I like about this wine is the lovely soft and velvety tannins that you come to expect from Pinot noir, ample middle palate with focus and balance. Medium body and expressive, no doubt one of the top not just from Otago but in the country. Cellar for another 5-6 years.... more »
  • Domaine Laffay Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon 2015 NZD $54.95 NZD $49.95
    154743
A relatively small vineyard quite elevated with an average vine age of 40 years and low yielding. This is a complete terroir expression of Chablis, nerve, vibrancy with racy mouth-watering acidity but yet with very good fruit weight and composure. 2015 provided another superb vintage from Chablis, low yields and a smaller production compared to other bigger vintages however we think it’s even better. More mineral, fuller body, in essence, a truer expression of Chablis. Cellar from 4 to 6 years.... more »
  • Dry River Viognier 2014 NZD $54.95 NZD $46.95 Out of Stock
    154228
At first glance the impression of the colour is yellow, which transforms into a bright golden aspect. An oily and candied nose with instantly identifiable peach and apricot bring a calming effect. This is a delightfully moderate aromatic wine full of complex aromas of lanolin, honeysuckle and mango. We believe Viognier is a variety which should show a viscous and buoyant palate, not driven by acidity, but by a soft texture and alcohol.... more »

  • Castorani Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva 2007 NZD $54.95 NZD $49.95
    154897A
A relatively cooler vintage that made things in the vineyard a little difficult however these people are perfectionists when it comes to these things. Double sorting in the winery and the vineyard, picking the very best out of the vintage ensured that the wine was still remarkable. Full bodied with a beautiful expression of dry herbs, graphite and alpine nuts. Beautiful now but not in a hurry to drink.... more »

    153777
We offered this a few months back from the 2001 and 2004 vintage. This is the 2010, another superb vintage in the history of Rioja, classical varieties of Tempranillo, Graciano and a little Mazuelo. Excellent now, for a wine under $60 you would open along-side a 2nd Growth from Bordeaux and a great 1er Cru from Burgundy and it is just as good! Balanced, lovely texture, full bodied, spicy and cigar box notes, delineated and powerful yet beautifully elegant. Drinking now or over the next 4-5 years.... more »
  • Dry River Lovat Gewurztraminer 2017 NZD $56.95 NZD $49.95
    154871
“Due to a long “hang” time in the vineyard this year, we see recognisable hallmarks of ripe Gewürztraminer; rose petals, lychee, mandarin and grapefruit rind. Since our aim is to produce a full bodied wine with a high aromatic density, yet a restraint and elegance, we generally make several picks through this vineyard at different ripening times. The last picking pass was with a high portion of Botrytis infected fruit, which is showcased by clover honey, candied ginger, Turkish delight and linalool. With the dense and ripe aromatics on display on the nose, the palate is surprisingly more light weight with a lower residual sugar than usual, 17 grams/litre. The consequence of this is a gentle entrance. However, the wine spreads fast and evenly, covering the complete palate with a friendly and buoyant mouthfeel. Good “housekeeping” is the playful threesome interaction between the fruit weight, the density and acidity. The latter keeps the wine fresh, alive and allows for a long and linear finish. This wine can be enjoyed young, or after five to eight years for added complexity.”... more »

  • A. Chauvet N.V. Blanc de Blancs NZD $59.95 NZD $54.95
    110777
Blanc de Blancs means that a Champagne or sparkling wine is made from 100% Chardonnay. This Champagne is also made from 100% Chardonnay sourced from some of the oldest and finest Grand Cru vineyards in the Champagne region. This particular style of Champagne results in a very powerful, full and dry wine. Flavours are more pronounced and robust with the classical "yeasty" tang that comes from the Chardonnay giving this bubbly a wonderful complexity. The bubbles are tiny and highly refined and the flavours will linger and last on your mouth well after each sip, all of which alludes to the quality of this wine. You will find much "branded" Champagne on the market that is of a similar quality to this wine retailing around $100 a bottle.... more »

  • Black Barn Tempranillo 2009 NZD $59.95 NZD $52.95 Out of Stock
    153388
Tempranillo it is very new to New Zealand, though it is showing some promise mainly in Hawkes Bay where weather conditions and soils seem to be very well suited to the grape variety. We have tried a number of them and without doubt this is the very best that we found, it is unmistakeably varietal in flavour and profile, leather, tobacco even dry saffron, everything that you would expect from a Rioja, in fact we tried it against some classical Rioja and it was surprising how well it compared. Black Barn is a leading Hawkes Bay producer and it is refreshing that they are prepared to push the boundaries and experiment with something out of the ordinary, they definitely hit the nail on the head with this one, lovely caressing ripe fruit, concentration, dry spice and vibrancy, starting to drink now but will also cellar for the next 3-4 years.... more »

  • Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2017 NZD $61.95 NZD $51.95
    112288
The 2017 vintage was cool and windy and the hallmark of the Chardonnays is fragrance. This is particularly present in Hunting Hill with its typical lemon/lime blossom aromas on the nose. Hunting Hill was harvested before any weather episodes of 2017 and the fruit was clean with beautiful flavours. This has come through in the finished wine with a supple texture and lingering finish. As with previous vintages of Hunting Hill we expect this to drink well for 6 – 8 years.... more »

  • Chateau Lafon La Tuilerie 2014 NZD $64.95 NZD $49.95
    154216
2014 was a vintage vastly different to 2009 and 2010, cooler with less heat yet a good long summer. This resulted in very even ripeness particularly for those producers that did a lot of work in the vineyard. Classical St. Emilion, vibrant acidity, lovely middle palate, freshness and good intensity. Without doubt one of the best balanced wines that we’ve seen in the last few years from Lafon la Tuilerie. Approachable now however this will be a gem in another few years, it has the pedigree and the composure to excel!... more »

  • Marc Bredif Vouvray 2004 NZD $64.95 Out of Stock
    154867
"A classic vintage in the Loire Valley with a long, slow ripening season and an abundant crop. For sweet Chenins, 2004 is perhaps overshadowed by the super-concentrated and short ‘03’s and the benchmark ‘05’s. Nevertheless, some excellent wines were made which should age well." -- 4 stars, Very Good. Michael Broadbent... more »
  • Dry River Pinot Gris 2017 NZD $64.95 NZD $58.95
    154870
“The defining influences that typify our Pinot Gris are, like always, vineyard related. No irrigation, high exposure to sunshine and small berries contribute and guarantee a base standard of deep concentration, structure and texture. Timing of picking is late, mid- to late April, and for the 2017 vintage the above were fundamental to this aromatic wine and avoided any lingering dilution. The fresh and lively aromatics form an interesting mix, where balance and restraint are key fundamentals of this wine. This year the wild flowers form the lively aspect and are the most noticeable, apple and orange blossoms provide the fresh characteristics. The nose is further filled with crushed apple, golden kiwi fruit and nashi pear. We were able to reduce the residual sugar levels for this vintage, this assists the refined palate in showing a little more minerality. As for the nose, the palate shows dense and transparent flavours of stone fruit and peach, with a gracious and unpretentious attitude. Part of the wine has been matured in French oak for 10 months, on lees. This helped to accentuate the length of the wine and bring more charm to the textural elements and pave a path for the fruit to shine. We predict this wine to evolve for the next three to five years and bring drinking pleasure for several years to follow.”... more »
  • Neudorf Moutere Pinot Noir 2015 NZD $69.95 NZD $59.95
    152020
Neudorf Moutere Pinot Noir has a reputation for elegance and ageability. This vintage continues the evolution under winemaker Todd Stevens. It’s fragrant; expressing plums, exotic spice, cracked pepper, Horopito for kiwis, brambles, mānuka bark and wood smoke. It’s rich but not overblown. The tannins are finely tuned and chiselled creating a wine which is groomed and precise. The Pinot Noir story in New Zealand has been changing as vine age takes hold and we celebrate Pinot of true beauty and restraint. We seek a melange of perfectly integrated flavours. In the Moutere we are happy to see Pinots with a refreshing, juicy acidity. Definitely deserving breast of duck, rack of lamb or grilled mushroom. ... more »

  • Dry River Pinot Gris 2015 NZD $74.95 NZD $69.95
    153780
Where in the last few years this wine showed rich and powerful aromatics, now elegance, refinement and authority are key words. Again, a purity of flavours is overarching a base layer of savoury components. The gentle scent of harakeke in flower, Nashi pear and exotic tropical aromas like papaya and guava are combined with butterscotch and vanilla custard. There is no clear division of taste, but a complexity that knows no boundaries or demarcations. Of recognisable interest are pistachio nuts, nougat and vanilla liqueur, further heightened with raisin pinwheels. Those familiar with it might recognise the traditional German amalgamation of fruit compote Rumtopf, without the excessive alcohol. The acidity acts as a faithful servant, maintaining freshness and length. We praise this wine for its early approachability, but it will certainly gain further interest over the next five to seven years.... more »
  • Dry River Chardonnay 2016 NZD $74.95 NZD $69.95
    153436
Straw coloured with green hues. This wine sits so comfortably within its framework that descriptors other than ‘pure Chardonnay’ almost seem trivial and inadequate. This wine is a stunning example of Chardonnay and a wine we have put a lot of thought into. Fruit characters such as white nectarine and citrus mingle with the subtle nuttiness of toasted and crushed almonds. Notes of brioche almost span the components of the wine-coming individually from barrels, the aging on lees, or both? The palate is extremely rich, which belies the fact that the alcohol is very low. This is definitely one of the most complex Chardonnays we have produced but still carrying the definitive Dry River DNA. Expect this wine to age very well in the cellar.... more »

The soil is based on sandstone with an ancient coral reef and volcanic basalt on top. Fermented and aged in 500l oak barrels for 10 months. Dry apricot, earthy notes, and a hint of smoke on the nose resolve on a palate that is balanced and lengthy, with a strong umami character to balance out the flinty minerality and extremely restrained stonefruit character. This wine explodes on your taste buds and remains there with a never-ending echo.... more »
  • Kumeu River Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay 2017 NZD $79.95 NZD $66.95
    11355
The Mate’s Vineyard is usually the most reserved and unyielding when young with the nose being closed, just giving hints of the golden queen peach and mineral notes that we expect from Mate’s Vineyard. On the palate however, the flavour is very concentrated and distinctly richer than the other 2017 wines, but maintaining a perfect balance and freshness that sets this wine apart and makes it wonderful. This is a wine of immense concentration that will be very long lived.... more »

  • Lourens River Valley Morgenster 2000 NZD $79.95 NZD $69.95
    112319
Founded in 1711 and revived to its former glory in 1992 by Italian businessman and wine collector Giulio Bertrand, Morgenster stands as one of the very best South African wines to be had. Made from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it captures the essence of Stellenbosch, the vineyards are on steep slopes ranging from 50m to 360m above sea level, planted at a density of 3000 vines per hectare and crop at 3.5–6.5 tons/hectare. You would be forgiven for thinking that you are trying a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classe because that’s just how good it is. Earthy overtones with ripe fruit, composed and elegant, medium to full body and after almost 15 years, still at its best. It is not often that we come across a gem like this from the very beginning of the century and at $47.95 per bottle, well we really don’t need to give any more reasons.... more »

Our first super deal on this was the 2004 vintage. We are lucky to have another super deal on the 2006 which is such as 2004, one of the greatest vintages in the history of Tuscany and Brunello. This is what Brunello really should be, with great structure, enormous concentration and depth, robust and full bodied yet elegant. • Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2014 NZD $94.95 NZD $79.95
    154446
“The 2014 Guidalberto is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, although the percentage of Merlot was reduced slightly in this vintage from 40% to 30%. Cabernet Sauvignon fared well during this difficult growing season, thanks to the advanced age of the vines and the hillside positioning of the vineyards. The Merlot was more problematic. This wine is the result of extreme fruit selection, nonetheless. Guidalberto is a medium-bodied red wine with a soft approach and bright berry flavors.” - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate Score: 89/100... more »

  • Dry River Pinot Noir 2016 NZD $96.95 NZD $89.95
    154869
“The 2016 vintage was our driest growing year in recent wine cultivation history. Fruit set was above average, and combined with good heat accumulation the resulting wine certainly shows ample concentration. Care was exercised in maintaining yield, approximately four tonnes/ha, and vigilant winegrowing techniques enabled ripening of what I consider to be a classic and refined Dry River Pinot Noir. Immediately red currant, strawberries and plum fruit deliver an aromatic hit. Though primary red fruit are visibly dominant, there is more to be found; Christmas spices, rosehip and floral notes like lilies and freshly cut hay are the more obvious characters that we see. The supporting role of the oak intensifies the underlying tobacco and caramel notes. The palate shows a youthful intensity with a tendency to speak with great clarity. However, another more serene voice commands the fruit to spread out and surrender to the maze of tannins and juicy acidity that ascends from underneath. They bring a degree of order and longevity through their ripe phenolic compounds. The restrained power and silky, linear tannins are strikingly intricate and invite further examination. Like most of our Pinot noirs, the 2016 wine requires three to five years additional evolution for optimum drinking pleasure.”... more »

This might well be good value once released. 88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate... more »

The majority of the blend has been Chardonnay which is probably the reason why it's quite different to other Champagne houses. It offers tremendous mouth feel coupled with yeasty characters and refined bubbles. • Ata Rangi McCrone Pinot Noir 2014 NZD $98.95 NZD $89.95
    154846
Ata Rangi's McCrone Vineyard was originally established by our team for friends Don and Carole McCrone who also grow Pinot Noir for leading Oregon producer Ken Wright Cellars. By 2001, when this 6-acre vineyard was planted, we had 20 years of Pinot experience and were able to choose clones and trellising styles that we considered consistently top performing. Unlike our own vineyard soil profiles, the McCrone site just around the corner in Regent St has a smattering of clay within the gravels. The cooling effect of this clay delivers a distinctively different aroma and flavour profile than that of the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir, even with vine age taken into account. The 2014 is the fifth release from this single site. Bottled in August 2015 this wine has been allowed to slowly evolve prior to release two years on. A bolder style than our flagship Pinot Noir, the nose offers a depth of rich spicy notes with a hint of manuka flower. It opens on the palate with a big swell of flavor supported by fine, velvety tannins. The finish is juicy and complex, with an evolution of flavours into a more savoury, umami style.... more »
