  • Ata Rangi Sauvignon Blanc 2016 NZD $29.95 NZD $24.95
    112629
"Helen has worked very hard at making a style that is suited to her fruit and the district, giving a point of difference to the passionfruity thiol-monsters of the 2016 Marlborough vintage. Elegance, freshness of fruit, more methoxypyrazine gooseberry fruit, bright acidity and delicate textures were the aim, and for this, she’s used some skin contact and 30% in barrel. Very pale straw. The nose is tight and elegant with ripe yellow stonefruits and green stonefruits, and no tropical fruit. On palate crisp and steely with a slippery mouthfeel. Gooseberry fruit with subtle textures and detail. But the fruit and freshness prevail. It’s a more slender wine than some of the worked examples made elsewhere." – Raymond Chan... more »

    11808
In the last 10-15 years, Central Otago has surged ahead in the production of outstanding Pinot Noir, lately they have also extended their search towards Riesling. Mt. Edward is perhaps the best exponent of both in this area and their Riesling (whenever it is available) is a true revelation of what can be done with this variety. The 2012 vintage has been one of the best for awhile, having tried it a few months ago it was already showing a lovely floral perfume, great texture and perfect acidity, made in an off-dry style and not overly alcoholic it is outstanding in its youth but will also cellar for another 3-4 years. • A. Chauvet Brut N.V. NZD $49.95 NZD $46.95
    110317
Most of you will know that in terms of value for money, this is as good as it gets! A Champagne of this quality doesn't always come at this price. Basically it delivers the quality of many other Champagnes at double the price, made from a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blend from the Tour-sur-Marne (very close to Laurent Perrier) that has been aged on its lees, giving it a nutty, yeasty, and light citrus flavour. The delicate finish is crisp and dry with a lingering acidity. A wonderful wine that is best served well chilled. You could even add a dash of Cassis or Frambois to make a refreshing apéritif... more »

  • Septima Malbec 2017 NZD $21.95 NZD $19.95
    153118
Another example of what Argentina is doing with this grape variety, they really have become the masters at it. Even countries such as Spain and Italy where they are head and shoulders above the rest are finding it difficult to make wines of this quality at the price. A full body wine with intensity and power, yet very elegant and balanced, depth, structure, complexity, everything is here. Quite remarkable for a wine around the $20 mark to have so much on offer. An array of mocha, smoke and old leather with sensational middle palate focus and purity, it is the sort of stuff that you expect from something around the $50 mark. You’ll enjoy this, why bother with pretenders?... more »

  • ES LO QUE HAY 2011 NZD $39.95 $31.95
    154016
ES LO QUE HAY – It´s what there is / It is what it is / That´s how it goes. A common Spanish expression but one I like to reserve for the few old high altitude Garnacha vineyards that survive in Aragon . What you taste in the bottle is a true expression of what there is in the vineyard. It´s as simple as that. It has an impenetrable purple colour with a bouquet of pronounced aromas of crushed violets and zarzaparrilla. Intense yet refined with lifted, perfumed fruit and wild mountain herbs. Full bodied, with rounded tannins, crisp acidity and a long mineral finish. High altitude ancient vineyards at 1000 to 1100 metres above sea level with ´pizarra´ slate and quartzite soils. Completely dry grown and unirrigated this is an inhospitable continental climate with extreme changes of temperature were mountain herbs, almonds, cherry trees and Garnacha form a breath-taking patchwork. Low annual rainfall of 200-300mm and the remarkable soils produce fine and elegant Garnacha which is punctuated by intense black fruit flavours with complex mineral, smoke and ‘garrigue’ notes. This is a pure unoaked Garnacha which is fermented in open top fermenters then aged on fine lees for 20 months before release. It is what it is ES LO QUE HAY... more »

Intense aromas abound; vibrant cherry fruit with an earthy, savoury undertone, reminiscent of being in an underground, chalk cave. This delicious herbal complexity being the result of a high percentage of whole bunches in the ferment. Generous fruit initially on the palate balances the salivating, chalky, mouth coating tannins. Good acid levels also enhance the drinkability of this Pinot and its ageability. 155101
Spicy aromas of black and white pepper abound with a heady perfume of orange blossom, mandarin skin essence, grapefruit and melon with hints of apricot kernels. The palate is rich and full yet with an elegance and purity at the same time; this is portrayed by the ripe flavours of passionfruit, orange and honey which is complimented by white pepper and lime zest. • Tongue in Groove Little Stomper 2018 NZD $38.95 NZD $29.95
    155100
This wine has intense aromas of Gewurztraminer (Gew); rose water, Turkish delight and hints of orange blossom from the Muscat. These aromas and flavours are supported by interesting peppery, earthy and chalky nuances due to the stems in the fermentation. The palate is rich and full with mouth coating tannins (extracted from both the stems and skins) giving a salivating texture balancing the gorgeous forward fruit typical of Gew and Muscat. This wine is incredibly drinkable and an excellent food match as the tannins will cut the richness of most dishes and give lasting pleasure in the glass... more »
  • Domaine Lafite Légende 2016 NZD $26.95 NZD $24.95
    155153
From the famous Domaine Baron de Rothschild, a superb entry level Bordeaux from a great classic vintage. Made from a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, it shows a deep crimson colour with a nose that is intense, very expressive, dominated by fresh fruit aromas (red currant, raspberry) and blended with discreet notes of oak. Beautiful now but will also cellar for a number of years and definitely excellent value for money... more »
  • Domaine William Fevre Petit Chablis 2016 NZD $39.95 NZD $37.95
    155185
“There is good Chablis typicity to the ripe pear and apple scents and it continues on the rich and vibrant flavors that possess an inner mouth perfume that is also based on apple, all wrapped in a lightly mineral-inflected finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is a quality effort in the context of the genre.” -- 87-89 Burghound... more »
  • Chateau Musar Jeune 2016 NZD $39.95 NZD $36.95
    155190
The Jeune 2016 is a blend of old vines Cinsault (45%), Syrah (45%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) from organically certified vineyards, harvested from late August onwards. The wines fermented in concrete vats, they were not fined or filtered and the sedimentation occurred naturally. The Musar Jeune Red 2016 is fresh, vibrant, fruity and soft with plenty of ripe red and dark fruit and a hint of sweet spice. The tannins are gentle and the finish smooth. It’s perfect for immediate drinking but also has years of ageing potential... more »
  • Vina Valoria Reserva 2013 NZD $34.95 NZD $29.95
    11941
A gem situated in the heart of Rioja dating back to 1860 making traditional unfiltered, unfined and old fashioned Rioja. A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo, the bouquet is a concussion of Jamon serrano, saffron, cured meats with fresh roasted herbs. For a Reserva 2013, it still has plenty to go. It’s vivacious, attacking on the middle palate with length, power and penetration. Keep and cellar for the next 5 years plus... more »
  • Vina Valoria Gran Reserva 2006 NZD $49.95 NZD $44.95
    155214
At 13 years old you would think that it is time to drink and even though it is beautiful now, it will keep going for another 10 years. The same blend as the Reserva but aged longer and from the best parcels in the vineyard. Full bodied, almost animal like with lots of herbs, saffron and cured meats. Great length but mostly beautifully balanced with lovely texture. A wine that is magnificent now but will age for 10 years plus. Decanting is advisable... more »

  • Domaine Laffay Chablis 2017 NZD $39.95 NZD $37.95
    155278
Classical Chablis this one, dry, mineral, crisp and bursting with freshness, clarity of fruit and medium body but always in balance, not austere or over-done. Laffay is one of those producers that stays the course, his approach is very much hands off when it comes to winemaking he prefers the vineyard to do the talking and this is very much reflected in the wine. It will evolve over the next 4 years or so as it is a little young at present but it will be worth waiting for... more »
