  • ES LO QUE HAY 2011 NZD $39.95 $31.95
    154016
ES LO QUE HAY – It´s what there is / It is what it is / That´s how it goes. A common Spanish expression but one I like to reserve for the few old high altitude Garnacha vineyards that survive in Aragon . What you taste in the bottle is a true expression of what there is in the vineyard. It´s as simple as that. It has an impenetrable purple colour with a bouquet of pronounced aromas of crushed violets and zarzaparrilla. Intense yet refined with lifted, perfumed fruit and wild mountain herbs. Full bodied, with rounded tannins, crisp acidity and a long mineral finish. High altitude ancient vineyards at 1000 to 1100 metres above sea level with ´pizarra´ slate and quartzite soils. Completely dry grown and unirrigated this is an inhospitable continental climate with extreme changes of temperature were mountain herbs, almonds, cherry trees and Garnacha form a breath-taking patchwork. Low annual rainfall of 200-300mm and the remarkable soils produce fine and elegant Garnacha which is punctuated by intense black fruit flavours with complex mineral, smoke and ‘garrigue’ notes. This is a pure unoaked Garnacha which is fermented in open top fermenters then aged on fine lees for 20 months before release. It is what it is ES LO QUE HAY!... more »

  • Chateau Cos D’Estournel 2009 NZD $789.95 Out of Stock
    EP154
“One of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted, the monumental 2009 Cos d’Estournel has lived up to its pre-bottling potential. A remarkable effort from winemaking guru Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot (33%) and a touch of Cabernet Franc (2%) was cropped at 33 hectoliters per hectare. It boasts an inky/black/purple color along with an extraordinary bouquet of white flowers interwoven with blackberry and blueberry liqueur, incense, charcoal and graphite. The wine hits the palate with extraordinary purity, balance and intensity as well as perfect equilibrium, and a seamless integration of tannin, acidity, wood and alcohol. An iconic wine as well as a remarkable achievement, it is the greatest Cos d’Estournel ever produced. It is approachable enough at present that one could appreciate it with several hours of decanting, but it will not hit its prime for a decade, and should age effortlessly for a half century.” Score 100/100 Robert Parker... more »

An amazing wine, incredible value for a 10 years old Gran Reserva which really is the equivalent of many $40 plus wines. As Spanish wine expert John Radford wrote in Decanter, the tiny enclave of Campo de Borja is "the source of some of the best value wines from Spain, if not the world". It's true. • Dry River Chardonnay 2017 NZD $74.95 NZD $69.95
    153436
Straw coloured with green hues. This wine sits so comfortably within its framework that descriptors other than ‘pure Chardonnay’ almost seem trivial and inadequate. This wine is a stunning example of Chardonnay and a wine we have put a lot of thought into. Fruit characters such as white nectarine and citrus mingle with the subtle nuttiness of toasted and crushed almonds. Notes of brioche almost span the components of the wine-coming individually from barrels, the aging on lees, or both? The palate is extremely rich, which belies the fact that the alcohol is very low. This is definitely one of the most complex Chardonnays we have produced but still carrying the definitive Dry River DNA. Expect this wine to age very well in the cellar.... more »
  • Dry River Pinot Gris 2015 NZD $74.95 NZD $69.95
    153780
Where in the last few years this wine showed rich and powerful aromatics, now elegance, refinement and authority are key words. Again, a purity of flavours is overarching a base layer of savoury components. The gentle scent of harakeke in flower, Nashi pear and exotic tropical aromas like papaya and guava are combined with butterscotch and vanilla custard. There is no clear division of taste, but a complexity that knows no boundaries or demarcations. Of recognisable interest are pistachio nuts, nougat and vanilla liqueur, further heightened with raisin pinwheels. Those familiar with it might recognise the traditional German amalgamation of fruit compote Rumtopf, without the excessive alcohol. The acidity acts as a faithful servant, maintaining freshness and length. We praise this wine for its early approachability, but it will certainly gain further interest over the next five to seven years.... more »
