Marques de Riscal Gran Reserva 2001
04/15/11
NZD $114.95 NZD $94.95
Marques de Riscal Gran Reserva is synonymous with outstanding Rioja. It is ranked as the first excellent vintage of the 21st century with a quality only matched by the excellent 1964. This is a wine that combines tradition and modernity, a perfect example of a Bodega established in the 19th century but looking ahead to the 21st. Made from Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo, it is dark cherry coloured with brick red hues with a complex aroma of balsamic, toasted oak and Asian spices. Full bodied, with a soft rounded mid palate that leads to a focused, clean yet persistent finish. One of the best value for money wines in the world that if anything, is just a little young and it will continue evolving for the next 15-20 years.

Marques de Riscal Reserva 2006
04/15/11
NZD $54.95 NZD $49.95
This Bodegas has been established in 1858. A pioneering winery in Rioja that goes back to the time when phylloxera devastated most of the French vineyards. Made from Tempranillo, Graciano and Mathuelo, exclusively from vines over 15 years of age. Strict harvesting by hand and aged for over 2 years which it must do by law, the wine is medium to full bodied with smoky and leather characteristics with hints of balsamic, soft, round tannins which make it ideal for having with chorizos, jamon serrano and game. Starting to drink very well now but can be cellared with confidence for the next 10 years plus.

Cvne Crianza 2006
09/16/10
NZD $34.95 NZD $32.95
One of the most basic wines from this producer yet delivering some outstanding value for money and still defining what Rioja is all about. Also mostly Tempranillo that when young is very fresh and lively but also capable of aging for a further 3-4 years. Bright cherry colour with some violet nuances. In the nose, red berries aromas remain over the oaky and balsamic notes from its ageing in wood. It shows an elegance in the mouth, yet very lively, with some spice back notes and a very balanced acidity.

Cvne Imperial Gran Reserva 1999
09/16/10
NZD $97.95 NZD $89.95
One of the true aristocratic Rioja’s from a great vintage that with 11 years of age is still relatively young. Made from 100% Tempranillo and only in excellent vintages, this wine displays an array of leather, saffron and dry herbs but yet remaining extremely fresh, clear and focused. We have compared this to some super second growths and even Grand Cru Burgundy and at the price, it delivers unbeatable value. One of the keys to great Rioja’s such as this are the great vinerous flavours, enormous middle palate and great texture. If you haven’t tried any great Rioja before, you should definately give this a go.

"A glass-coating purple/black colour, it offers up a brooding bouquet of wood smoke, pencil lead, liquorice, plum and blackberry. Opulent and rich on the palate with layers of succulent fruit, it should be at its best from 2016 to 2026."
