Vina Gormaz 2006
NZD $21.95 NZD $19.95
The 2006 Vina Gormaz Tempranillo, produced from 50+-year-old ungrafted Tempranillo vines, is as good a value as exists from the D.O. of Ribera del Duero. This unoaked wine is dark ruby-colored with aromas of earth, spice, mineral, plum, and black currants. This is followed by a medium-bodied, ripe wine, with layered flavors, light tannin, and good balance. This is another great example of the extraordinary wealth and depth of wines to be found in Spain over the last 20 years or so. Drinking beautifully now, still offering very fresh and clean matured fruit flavours that can develop for another 3-5 years.

Pesquera Crianza 2006
NZD $58.95 NZD $54.95
Very few people can take credit for revolutionising a major wine region. Baron Philippe de Rothschild in Bordeaux, Robert Mondavi in Napa Valley, and now another to add to the list is the young 65 year old Alejandre Fernandez, creator of the world famous 'Pesquera' from Spain's Ribera del Duero area, south-east of the Rioja region.

Bodegas Alion 2005
NZD $149.95
Out of Stock
Ahhh here we are. Deft oak work, olives and undergrowth, violets and mulberry backed up by some dark cherry. The nose shows very little obvious oak characters, but there is some coffee there if you look hard enough. Well structured and balanced, the palate shows juicy red and black fruits and with layers of herbs, earth and fruit. Excellent wine, and only just pipped by the 04, will cellar for 10 years+.

Vega Sicilia Valbuena 2004
NZD $329.95
A classic Vega Sicilia, nose of VA, violets, a little funky barnyard, plums and red berries with some dusty earth. The palate shows structure and is quite tannic for this style. Loads of mulberries and red cherries with a slightly under ripe plum note (this is a good thing). Lip smacking acid and a big ol’ finish complete the picture.

Vega Sicilia Unico 1998
NZD $689.95
These are Robert Parker's tasting notes from the 1998 vintage:
"The 1998 Unico is purple-colored with a complex bouquet of wood smoke, violets, Asian spices, mineral, blueberry, and assorted black fruits. This is followed by a full-bodied, dense, loaded wine with gobs of sweet fruit, great concentration, and layers of flavor. It will continue to evolve for another 5-7 years and drink well through 2040+." 98/100 Robert Parker

Vega Sicilia Reserva Especial N.V.
NZD $789.95
Reserva Especial has no vintage, as it blends harvests, and it represents a very old Spanish custom and brings together the balance of different vintages. The 2009-release is a blend of the 90/94/96 vintages it has a dark cherry tone that is opaque and full of colour. It is elegant on the nose, with notes of pencil shavings, smoke, coconut, cherry liqueur, creme de cassis, spice box, licorice, and caramel. On the palate, there is fabulous concentration, silky texture, and opulent, powerful flavours, and an impressively long finish. Drink 2008-2027.
