Good concentration of cassis fruit, good solid wine with more structure than elegance.
- Decanter Magazine 3/5
The dense 2005 Rollan de By offers terrific fruit, full body, loads of tannin and plenty of earth, black fruit, spice and forrest floor characteristics. It should round into shape in 2-3 years and keep for a decade or more.

Another exceptional up and coming performer in the southern Médoc (just outside the Margaux appellation), this sensual blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot Possesses a dark ruby/purple colour, sweet fruit and tremendous purity, definition and nuances (a hallmark of the top 2005s). With medium to full body, velvety but noticable tannin and abundant glycerin (no doubt because of the 13+% natural alcohol). It should drink well for 7-8 years.
- Robert Parker 88-90
While the 2005 does not equal the prodigious 2003 (the finest La Vieille Cure to date), this Merlot-dominated effort was fashioned under the guidance of Michel Rolland. It is a dense, powerful, dark ruby/purple-tinged offering exhibiting a big structure, loads of substance as well as extract and high tannin. Give this sleep of the vintage 2-3 years of bottle age and consume it over the following two decades.
- Robert Parker 89-91
Clos Puy Arnaud is nearly always a seriously made as well as potentially long-lived offering, as evidenced by the 2005. This blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. It boasts a saturated blue/purple colour in addition to a sweet nose of black raspberries, cranberries, crushed rocks and background wood. Displaying terrific old vine intensity, it hits the palate with a rush of fruit, glycene and tannin. With good structure, purity and potential, it will require 2-3 years to settle down and should last for 5 or more years.
- Robert Parker 90-92
Fine deep cassis fruit, quite full, grippy and long, the Saint-Julien of the Médoc. Drink 2009-2016.

From the personal estate of one of Bordeaux's most influential tastemakers, Hubert de Bouard, the 2005 La Fleur de Bouard is potentially one of the finest yet produced... and that's saying something given the consistent quality. A blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, its blue/black/purple colour is accompanied by beautiful aromas of charcoal, melted licorice espresso, blackberries and blue fruits. Deep, opulent and full bodied with sewet tannin as well as a powerful finish. It will require consumption during its first 7-8 years of life.
- Robert Parker 90-92
A strong effort from this estate, the 2005 Dassault, a sleeper of the vintage, has a deep ruby/purple colour, fragrant aromas of blueberries and candid cherries, medium body and excellent texture as well as concentration. The silky tannin suggests it will be accessible upon release and keep for 10-12 years.
- Robert Parker 88-90
The Clos de Castillon offering from perfectionists Chantal and Gérard Perse, the 2005 Clos des Lunelles fashioned from yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare, is a candidate for the reference point wine of the appellation. Inky/blue/purple-coloured with stunning aromas of spring flowers, sweet cherries, black currants, crushed rocks and new oak, it possesses fabulous fruit, remarkable intensity and texture, full body and a huge moderately tannic finish. The natural alcohol comes in at 14.3%. Anticipated maturity is 2010-2020+.
- Robert Parker 91-94
A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, this wine will have 40-50 years of longevility and should turn out to be the greatest Pontet-Canet since such ancient classics as 1961, 1945 and 1929. It boasts an inky/purple colour as well as pure creme de cassis aromas, first-growth nobility and raciness, massive body, tannin and extract and a finish that lasts nearly a minute. With extraordinary purity and density, it is unapproachable at present and is best cellared untill 2012 and drunk over the following 50 years.
- Robert Parker 94-96
A blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2005 (13.5% alcohol) possesses a saturated blue/purple colour as well as a big, sweet nose of pain grille, roasted herbs, grilled meats, black cherry jam, blackberries and spice. Powerful, full-bodied and dense yet elegant, deep and layered, its pure fruit concentration and overall quality hide the moderately high tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2023.
