Aalto Ossian 2007
03/11/09
NZD $79.95 NZD $64.95
This is another example of how far Spain have travelled on the quality wine production stakes, this is very rare and it hardly ever goes outside of Spain but for lovers of any Puligny Montrachet wines including Grand Crus, you should take a few bottles of this because this is just amazing value. This new project from Aalto’s Javier Zaccagnini and Burgundian enologist Pierre Millemann is made from 180 year-old, organically farmed, ungrafted verdejo vineyards. Inspired by the great Chardonnays of Montrachet, this wine was raised in a combination of new and used French oak for 8 months prior to bottling. Production is very limited. Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years.

Garci Grande Verdejo 2006

Spain has surged ahead from a bulk producer to the most innovative, creative and single minded quality driven country in the world over the last 20 years. Still most people will be more familiar with the reds than with the whites and this is simply because worldwide most people still think of Spain as being a very hot climate country when the truth is that it has enormous variations between north and south, east and west. Verdejo has always been one of the classical varieties planted across various regions for many years but the modern versions are just absolutely outstanding. This pale yellow wine sparkles clean and brilliant. With delicate citrus lemon nuances alongside touches of herbs and fruit, its mouthfeel is well-structured with long body and a good aftertaste. It exudes a pleasant freshness on the palate, round soft and unctuous. The finish is persistent, soft and elegant. Suitable with fish, rice dishes, vegetables and pasta.

Lurton Rueda 2005

The huge revolution that Spain has undergone in making wine did not only extend to the reds but also to their whites. This is a magnificent example of low yielding Viura and Verdejo can make. The wine is pale and very clear yellow with glints of green. Very good intensity dominated by the fruity side of the Verdejo. White fruits (white peaches), notes of apricot, candied fruits, with a hint of fresh butter. Beautiful freshness that balances the volume in the mouth admirably well. Equally good aromatic intensity, with an explosion of white fruits (nicely ripe white peaches, melon) giving an impression of sweetness.
