Septima Gran Reserva Malbec 2008
08/20/09
NZD $51.95 NZD $48.95
As I said before this is the kind of wine that you can expect nowadays from Argentina, the Gran Reserva is very much based in the Spanish model of ageing longer in oak when this is required. Handpicked parcels from the best vineyard sites, sorted and double sorted in the winery then given an extra hot ferment, the result is an extremely full body and intense wine with absolute focus, minerality and pinpoint accuracy. We have tried this against some very fancy Bordeaux at well over the $100 mark, it was revealing, it took about 4-5 hours for the wine to come out but when it did… well… just magnificent! For those that enjoy full body super charge yet balanced wine, this is for you.

Chanarmuyo Malbec 2009
08/08/08
NZD $19.95 NZD $18.95
Chanarmuyo Estate is a winery that combines both the exclusive resources of a unique terroir and the highest technology in its production processes. Its vineyards extend across the Paimén range foot, at the North of Famatina Department, in La Rioja Province, where height and soil merge into a perfect blend: deserts of cold nights and sunny days. On its own premises, the winery processes the grapes as soon as they are harvested and bottles wines that comply with international quality standards. A malbec of intense, deep red colour with purple tinges. It displays a complex aroma of plums and cherries with notes of raisins and mint. It combines a bouquet of sweet, soft tannins with a buttery sensation. Oak aging contributes hints of vanilla and chocolate to the concentrated body of this great wine.

Pleasant Valley Malbec 2006
08/08/08
NZD $19.95 NZD $14.95
We came across this wine purely by chance in fact it came right in the middle of a Malbec tasting from Argentina. We knew that it wasn't Argentinean but we were very surprised to find out that it was from Waiheke Island and then even more surprised to find out its price. This is Malbec as it should be reminiscent of an Argentinean from San Juan rather than Mendoza, floral with lots of dark chocolate, leather and dry spice, excellent tannins, ripe, subtle and soft, full bodied with well integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol, very good length on the finish and is an absolute steal at its price! We are always quite wary and critical of New Zealand red wines purely because of their price but it is good to see something like this which offers very good quality at an excellent price. There should be more producers out there like this and they wont have any problems selling their wine! Drink now or over the next couple of years.
