  • Chateau Fombrauge 2005 NZD $129.95 NZD $94.95
"This estate has come on strong under the auspices of visionary proprietor Bernard Magrez and winemaking consultant Michel Rolland, and it has been one of this journal's great value picks over the last 7-8 vintages. In 2005, the harvest took place between September 22nd and October 6th, and the final blend consisted of 77% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its dense purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of white chocolate, graphite, black cherry jam, and currants. Medium to full-bodied with moderate tannin, more structure than usual, loads of glycerin, and a persistent mouthfeel, it should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and evolve for 12-15."

  • Chateau La Grande Clotte 2004 NZD $34.95 NZD $29.95
This comes from Michel Rolland's personal property and shows the hallmark of his winemaking style of well integrated oak and silky tannins. An exceptional Saint-Emilion that offers extraordinary value for money, the 2004 vintage will start drinking quite well now and over the next 5-6 years. Lovely ripe Merlot and Cabernet Franc which offers an array of dark berry fruit, minerals and soave tannins with an ample middle palate, concentration and power. One of the best value for money St. Emilion that you’ll come across.
  • Chateau Lafon La Tuilerie 2004 NZD $56.95

This is a "Grand Cru Classe" wine from St Emilion and is made by the Lafon family, who are responsible of producing another Accent On Wine favourite the Lagrave Paran. Made from Merlot, Cab Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the wine is garnet red in colour tending to black with a lot of perfume of dry herbs and rose petals, an indication of its relative youth. The wine reflects the typical terrior of St Emilion being a dry firm wine with a great backbone. The wine often takes two to three years from vintage to start developing.

  • Chateau Monbousquet 2005 NZD $164.95

A blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2005 (13.5% alcohol) possesses a saturated blue/purple colour as well as a big, sweet nose of pain grille, roasted herbs, grilled meats, black cherry jam, blackberries and spice. Powerful, full-bodied and dense yet elegant, deep and layered, its pure fruit concentration and overall quality hide the moderately high tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2023.

  • Chateau Lafon La Tuilerie 2005 NZD $69.95 NZD $64.95
2005 was one of the best vintages on record in Bordeaux. Seeing the prices of other 2005 Bordeaux, this is a sure thing in fact it's a complete steal! Owned and operated by the Lafon family well known in Bordeaux as wine growers and makers, this is pretty much the flagship of the company. 2005 is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, its incredibly ripe and concentrated. On the nose it displays cassis, floral undergrowth, tar and mint. Because of the nature of the 2005 vintage, it offers superb ripe tannins, interlinked with espresso froth, mocca, lead pencil yet remaining fresh, pure and vibrant. Superb 10-15 second finish with excellent length. An outstanding offering for those that love classic Bordeaux at its best. Cellar for 8 years plus.
  • Chateau Dassault 2005 NZD $98.95

A strong effort from this estate, the 2005 Dassault, a sleeper of the vintage, has a deep ruby/purple colour, fragrant aromas of blueberries and candid cherries, medium body and excellent texture as well as concentration. The silky tannin suggests it will be accessible upon release and keep for 10-12 years.

  • Chateau Lafon La Tuilerie 2002 NZD $59.95 NZD $53.95

Seeing the prices of 2005 Bordeaux, this is a sure thing in fact it's a complete steal! Owned and operated by the Lafon family well known in Bordeaux as wine growers and makers, this is pretty much the flagship of the company. 2002 is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose it displays cassis, floral undergrowth, tar and mint and offers superb ripe tannins, interlinked with espresso froth, mocca, lead pencil yet remaining fresh, pure and vibrant. • Chateau Cantenac 2009 NZD $39.95
From the stable of Chateau des Sources, this 1.7-hectare vineyard is planted with 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It has quite a dense nose that is more introverted than the Petit Cantenac because of the higher percentage of new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very good weight but tightly coiled. I like the purity here and the chalky texture towards the finish and part of me wishes that a) there was less new oak and b) there was say, 20% Cabernet Franc. Just the right amount of dryness to counterbalance the richness here. This should be very interesting after bottling. Very fine. Tasted April 2010.
