  • Chateau Lynch Bages 2009 NZD $289.95
"The highest levels of polyphenols ever measured at Lynch Bages (20% higher than any prior vintage) are found in the 2009, which achieved 13.4% natural alcohol, and a normal pH of 3.64. Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is the greatest Lynch Bages since the outstanding duo of 1989 and 1990. The black/purple-tinged 2009 exhibits a glorious perfume of graphite, black currants, and subtle smoke, powerful, thick, unctuously textured flavours, huge yet sweet tannins, fabulous purity, and a finish that lasts 40-45 seconds. Five to eight years of patience will be required, but this is a 30-40-year wine from this popular estate run by the affable and highly respected Cazes family. (Tasted three times.)"
    Robert Parker 94-96+/100

Please Note: This wine will be arriving on approximately January 2012.
  • Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2006 NZD $994.95 Out of stock
"A sensational effort, the 2006 Mouton Rothschild exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a classic Mouton perfume of creme de cassis, flowers, blueberries, and only a hint of oak. Dalhuin told me that in whisky barrel-tasting vintages such as 1989 and 1990, Mouton was aged in heavily-toasted barrels, and they have backed off to a much lighter toast for the barrels’ interior. I think this has worked fabulously well with the cassis quality fruit they get from their Cabernet Sauvignon. The full-bodied, powerful 2006 possesses extraordinary purity and clarity. A large-scaled, massive Mouton Rothschild that ranks as one of the top four or five wines of the vintage, it may turn out to be the longest-lived wine of the vintage by a landslide. The label will undoubtedly be controversial as a relative of Sigmund Freud, Lucian Freud, has painted a rather comical Zebra staring aimlessly at what appears to be a palm tree in the middle of a stark courtyard. I suppose a psychiatrist could figur... more »
  • Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2006 NZD $984.95 Out of stock
"One of the fabulous surprises, although I had suggested last year that it could jump in quality, of my tastings, the 2006 Lafite Rothschild is a great, great wine made from a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. When I tasted it from barrel, it reminded me of their successful 1988, but it is dramatically superior to that vintage. Frankly, it may turn out to be as good as the 2005, which in all of Bordeaux is a far greater vintage than 2006. Lafite’s severe selection process (42% made it into the grand vin) resulted in a full-bodied wine boasting an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, truffles, lead pencil shavings, and sensationally sweet, ripe black currant and cedar notes. A wine of extraordinary intensity, texture, and depth with silky tannins as well as awesome concentration, this has turned out to be a remarkable Lafite Rothschild that should be drinkable much earlier than the 2005, but age for three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2035+." ... more »
  • Chateau Lynch Bages 2005 NZD $249.95 NZD $194.95
"This outstanding effort is slightly lighter, more streamlined and delicate than followers of Lynch Bages have come to expect after such great vintages as 1982, 1989, 1990, 1996, and 2000. A deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by a classic Medoc nose of tapenade, roasted herbs, licorice, cedar, black currants, and damp earth. Medium-bodied with moderate tannin, sweet fruit, and surprising softness as well as forwardness for a 2005 northern Medoc, it can be drunk now and over the next 20+ years."

  • Chateau Latour 1989 NZD $1389.95
Perhaps the most classical and consistent of all the first growths from Bordeaux, 1989 was one of those good vintages that was completely overshadowed by the classic 1990, a little like 1983 and 1982 infact. To accurately asses a wine like this, it must be tried at various stages, we have tried this around the year 2000 and it had already shed its coat of youthfulness. It had superb colour, full bodied, really pure, focused and delineated. We anticipate that it will be drinking beautifully now or over the next few coming years. We also introduce here a tasting from Wine Spectator: "A monster wine of huge structure. Superdark-ruby color. Intense aromas of plums, berries and spices with highlights of cinnamon. Full-bodied, massive, adding loads of chewy tannins." Score:97/100 Robert Parker --Wine Spectator.... more »
  • Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1990 NZD $2459.95
"As I suspected, the 1989 and 1990 vintages of Lafite-Rothschild have gone dormant. Both wines were among the more closed, backward examples in my blind tasting. The 1990 is riper, richer, and more textured, but mouthsearing tannin and a closed personality make it hard to fully assess. The wine possesses excellent richness, a hint of the unmistakable Lafite perfume of minerals, cedar, lead pencil, and red fruits, medium to full body, moderate weight, admirable richness and overall balance, and a tough finish. Give it a decade of cellaring to shed some tannin and evolve; it may be a 40-50-year Lafite. As outstanding as I believe it will ultimately turn out to be, I do not think the 1990 Lafite will ever match the sheer class, quality, and complexity of the 1988, 1986, and 1982. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035." Score:92/100 Robert Parker --Wine Spectator.... more »

  • Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2005 NZD $224.95 NZD $189.95
"The brilliant 2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits classic Pauillac aromas and flavours of creme de cassis along with stony/floral notes. Proprietor Xavier Borie has created a wine that should rival the brilliant 1982, 1990, 1996, and 2000. Full-bodied with sweet tannin and superb length (a 40+ second finish), the purity of this beauty’s black currant fruit is something to behold. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2030."

  • Chateau Haut Batailley 2003 NZD $89.95 NZD $84.95
This particular property situated in Pauillac is classified as a 5th growth and has gone from strength to strength over the last 10-15 years. The 2003 vintage is a remarkably hot one but very suited to Pauillac, Haut-Batailley made an absolutely classic wine, a complete charmer. This is typical Pauillac with its cider and lead pencil aromas, big concentration of blackberry fruit flavours, compote and medium to full bodied. As with most 2003s the wines are very approachable now but will also cellar for a number of years. For anyone wanting a superb blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this is it. Outstanding depth and vibrancy yet remaining very clean and pure. Cellar for 8-10 years.... more »
