Grant Burge has become one of Australia's leading wine labels internationally due to the popularity of their consistently high quality red wines. The "Meshach" is the premium label of this winery and is named after Grant Burge's Great-Grandfather,Meshach Burge, who was one of the early pioneers of wine production in the Barossa. The fruit for this wine was harvested by hand from 80 year old vines from Burge's Filsell Vineyard that produce fruit with immense concentration and power.
On the nose this wine is packed full of sweet vanilla and plummy fruit aromas.Aged in new American Oak barrels for just over two years, the Meshach is a big, complex and concentrated red wine, with a hint of spiciness and cigar box. With a chewy almost fleshy palate and a subtle backbone of soft tannins, this wine will mature and improve over the next twenty years. Why pay $300 for Grange when you can have this superb Shiraz at 1/3 the price?.

Deep red and almost black in colour, this Merlot has aromas of ripe fruit, plum, cherry and blackberry with hints of charry oak and dark chocolate. Richland Pinot Grigio 2010
08/04/11
NZD $18.95 NZD $16.95
Over the last 15 years of so, Australia has completely revolutionized their wine growing and wine making. Long gone are the days of overly oaked, sweet and jammy Shiraz’s. Nowadays they have been replaced with an array of different varieties from all over Europe. Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio is one of them. Done in a dry style, with flinty fresh characters, slightly oily, no oak, very well balanced and refreshing. Very much along the lines of a northern Italian Pinot Grigio. Beautiful for summer with anti-pastos, shellfish, fish etc.

Richland Chardonnay 2010
08/04/11
NZD $18.95 NZD $16.95
The days of overly oaked, slightly rancid and oxidized Australian Chardonnay are well and truly gone. This is an example of how the modern styles have evolved over the last 10 or so years, clean with a soft creamy texture and even though it does have oak, it is well balanced and integrated into the wine. A very good Chardonnay to have with chicken dishes, fish but even though it is full bodied, also still remains very clean, flinty and refreshing and the price is an excellent example of an outstanding Chardonnay.

Westend Tempranillo 2008
10/05/10
NZD $19.95 NZD $18.95
Australia are beginning to do very sexy things with Tempranillo, it would not be surprising in 10 years time for this variety to overtake the more established ones, but their climate will always be suited to this variety and with an array of diverse terroir as they have it is only a matter of time before they can produce very good Tempranillo and very well priced. Westend are situated in Griffith, NSW, they produce excellent value wines from many varieties, Tempranillo is their latest and probably their best. At the moment is showing terrific ripe fruit with intensity and depth, spice, leather, tobacco, dry herbs but the best thing about it is the balance and profile of flavour, lovely concentration and texture, for those new to the variety, you should start here you won’t be disappointed.

Westend 3 Bridges Shiraz 2006
08/19/08
NZD $28.95 NZD $24.95
Out of Stock
This wine has also received more medals than an army general, including a gold at the Perth Wine Show. A glorious vintage which has produced a big, fat and almost chewy Shiraz with intense black pepper and spice, yet with soft, rounded tannins and a long robust, chocolate finish. Keep this one for 5 years, also. Again, we think this is a steal for the price and strongly advise stocking up large.

Westend 3 Bridges Durif 2007
08/19/08
NZD $28.95 NZD $26.95
Durif is a fairly new and exciting grape variety being grown in Australia and does not come with the massive profile of its popular counterpart Shiraz. It is believed this particular grape variety may have originated in the Cote du Rhone region in the South of France, but unproven theories suggest it managed to find its way naturally to California where it has achieved great critical and commercial success. Today the variety is grown in Western Australia, Hunter Valley and Barossa. It has a similar colour to Shiraz but is even more concentrated and richer. The wine has a thick, pure charcoal black colour with hugely intense peppery savoury and sweet/sour characteristics. Very frontal, it grabs you and doesn't let go. If you love the heaviest of Shirazes you will adore this spectacular new grape variety. You can drink this with hearty dishes and BBQ steaks even though part of the wine has undergone carbonic maceration creating soft and velvety tannins. Approachable now or will keep 4-5 years.
