Ampakama Viognier 2007
NZD $19.95 NZD $18.95
Argentina is becoming a major force in the world of wine, their Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet are internationally renown all over, and they haven’t stopped there. Viognier is becoming another signature wine for them. This particular Viognier comes from the region of San Juan which is situated in the north west of the country bordering Chile at 700 metres above sea level. It is expressive with excellent concentration and depth, very well layered, elegant and balanced. Superb fruit and freshness, focused and full body with an outstanding middle palate, have it with fish, soft cheese or just simply on its own.

Chanarmuyo Reserve Tannat 2005
NZD $29.95 NZD $26.95
Over the last 15 years, Argentina has become a major force in quality wine production, they have combined local and imported grape varieties and they completely transformed and adopted them to their respective terroir. This is from the region of La Rioja from a single vineyard estate situated at 1700m above sea level, you really couldn't get much better terroir than this for the production of both red and white wine. Tannat which is a grape variety originally planted in Bordeaux, produces outstanding full bodied wines. At the moment the 2005 is showing a lot of dark berry fruits with enormous minerality, broad, expressive and very persistent on the finish. Ideal with BBQ meats especially beef. Drink now or over the next 3-5 years.

La Puerta Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
NZD $19.95 NZD $18.95
This is just to show that Argentina does not only make Malbec but also just outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon. La Puerta is situated in La Rioja which as a region, quality wise, rivals Mendoza. You could almost say that this is an influence of Spanish Rioja and French Bordeaux, it offers an abundance of fruit, especially dark berry, tobacco leaf with hints of well integrated oak. We have tried this alongside other wines at the $40-$50 mark and it doesn’t only rate, it is as good if not better!

Chanarmuyo Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
NZD $29.95 NZD $23.95
We have been waiting for a while for this, one of our star-buys last year, we had a lot of repeat orders and we are delighted to have it back An excellent producer from one of the most unique and best regions in Argentina, La Rioja situated 1700 meters above sea level with a unique terroir for the production of Cabernet Sauvignon. Excellent clear hot days with not a cloud in the sky follow by crisp cool nights which are ideally suited for even ripeness in Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine shows excellent concentration and middle palate, well structured, layered with hints of cigar box, lead pencil and evenly ripe fruit.

Chanarmuyo Malbec 2005
NZD $23.95 NZD $21.95
Chanarmuyo Estate is a winery that combines both the exclusive resources of a unique terroir and the highest technology in its production processes. Its vineyards extend across the Paimén range foot, at the North of Famatina Department, in La Rioja Province, where height and soil merge into a perfect blend: deserts of cold nights and sunny days. On its own premises, the winery processes the grapes as soon as they are harvested and bottles wines that comply with international quality standards. A malbec of intense, deep red colour with purple tinges. It displays a complex aroma of plums and cherries with notes of raisins and mint. It combines a bouquet of sweet, soft tannins with a buttery sensation. Oak aging contributes hints of vanilla and chocolate to the concentrated body of this great wine.

Septima Gran Reserva Malbec 2006
NZD $51.95 NZD $48.95
As I said before this is the kind of wine that you can expect nowadays from Argentina, the Gran Reserva is very much based in the Spanish model of ageing longer in oak when this is required. Handpicked parcels from the best vineyard sites, sorted and double sorted in the winery then given an extra hot ferment, the result is an extremely full body and intense wine with absolute focus, minerality and pinpoint accuracy. We have tried this against some very fancy Bordeaux at well over the $100 mark, it was revealing, it took about 4-5 hours for the wine to come out but when it did… well… just magnificent! For those that enjoy full body super charge yet balanced wine, this is for you.

Septima Malbec 2007
NZD $24.95 NZD $21.95
Another example of what Argentina is doing with this grape variety, they really have become the masters at it. Even countries such as Spain and Italy where they are head and shoulders above the rest are finding it difficult to make wines of this quality at the price. A full body wine with intensity and power, yet very elegant and balanced, depth, structure, complexity, everything is here. Quite remarkable for a wine around the $20 mark to have so much on offer. An array of mocha, smoke and old leather with sensational middle palate focus and purity, it is the sort of stuff that you expect from something around the $50 + mark. You’ll enjoy this, why bother with pretenders?

Avanti Chenin Blanc Torrontes 2007
NZD $16.95 NZD $15.95
From over 1000 metres above sea level at the foot of the Andes in Mendoza, Argentina. For those that think that this is only red wine country, think again because they also produce outstanding whites at incredible prices. Made from Chenin Blanc and Torrontes, it is refreshing, crisp and minerally with excellent freshness and vibrancy, for wine of this quality you would expect to pay well over the $20.00 mark, but you won't have to, $15.95 in cases of 12.

Finca El Origen Reserva Malbec 2006
NZD $24.95 NZD $22.95
Malbec is what made Argentina famous, for those familiar with it will know why, it is always a versatile wine that can be drunk young but it also can age very well. Lovely flavours of cocoa, smoked meats with excellent minerality and subtle tannins, always full body and succulent, expressive with tremendous minerality and an instant mouth appeal of blackberry fruits this is due mostly to its altitude, exceptional terroir and vineyard sites, very few areas in the world make Malbec like Mendoza. Excellent with grilled meats.

Don Baltazar Chardonnay Viognier 2005
NZD $11.95 NZD $10.95
Combining the two varieties in a unique and anthological mix: fresh and fine aromas of exotic fruits of the Chardonnay and those of the Viognier. A lovely dry aromatic and minerally wine which for lovers of Chablis it will go down very well, though it still has very good upfront fruit with depth and minerality and finishing flinty and crisp. It is an excellent complement of white meats, fresh sea products, rices and young cheeses.
