  • Ampakama Viognier 2008 11/19/08 NZD $19.95 NZD $18.95 Out of Stock
Argentina is becoming a major force in the world of wine, their Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet are internationally renown all over, and they haven’t stopped there. Viognier is becoming another signature wine for them. This particular Viognier comes from the region of San Juan which is situated in the north west of the country bordering Chile at 700 metres above sea level. It is expressive with excellent concentration and depth, very well layered, elegant and balanced. Superb fruit and freshness, focused and full body with an outstanding middle palate, have it with fish, soft cheese or just simply on its own.

La Rioja

  • Chanarmuyo Reserve Tannat 2005 02/25/09 NZD $29.95 NZD $26.95
Over the last 15 years, Argentina has become a major force in quality wine production, they have combined local and imported grape varieties and they completely transformed and adopted them to their respective terroir. This is from the region of La Rioja from a single vineyard estate situated at 1700m above sea level, you really couldn't get much better terroir than this for the production of both red and white wine. Tannat which is a grape variety originally planted in Bordeaux, produces outstanding full bodied wines. At the moment the 2005 is showing a lot of dark berry fruits with enormous minerality, broad, expressive and very persistent on the finish. Ideal with BBQ meats especially beef. Drink now or over the next 3-5 years.
  • La Puerta Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 01/29/09 NZD $19.95 NZD $18.95
This is just to show that Argentina does not only make Malbec but also just outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon. La Puerta is situated in La Rioja which as a region, quality wise, rivals Mendoza. You could almost say that this is an influence of Spanish Rioja and French Bordeaux, it offers an abundance of fruit, especially dark berry, tobacco leaf with hints of well integrated oak. We have tried this alongside other wines at the $40-$50 mark and it doesn’t only rate, it is as good if not better!
  • Chanarmuyo Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 11/25/08 NZD $29.95 NZD $23.95
We have been waiting for a while for this, one of our star-buys last year, we had a lot of repeat orders and we are delighted to have it back An excellent producer from one of the most unique and best regions in Argentina, La Rioja situated 1700 meters above sea level with a unique terroir for the production of Cabernet Sauvignon. Excellent clear hot days with not a cloud in the sky follow by crisp cool nights which are ideally suited for even ripeness in Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine shows excellent concentration and middle palate, well structured, layered with hints of cigar box, lead pencil and evenly ripe fruit.
  • Chanarmuyo Malbec 2009 08/08/08 NZD $19.95 NZD $18.95
Chanarmuyo Estate is a winery that combines both the exclusive resources of a unique terroir and the highest technology in its production processes. Its vineyards extend across the Paimén range foot, at the North of Famatina Department, in La Rioja Province, where height and soil merge into a perfect blend: deserts of cold nights and sunny days. On its own premises, the winery processes the grapes as soon as they are harvested and bottles wines that comply with international quality standards. A malbec of intense, deep red colour with purple tinges. It displays a complex aroma of plums and cherries with notes of raisins and mint. It combines a bouquet of sweet, soft tannins with a buttery sensation. Oak aging contributes hints of vanilla and chocolate to the concentrated body of this great wine.

Mendoza

  • Uruco Malbec 2008 06/23/11 NZD $29.95 NZD $27.95
When it comes to great Malbec, Mendoza is second to none. This is another example of a very full bodied wine with great concentration and poise. Big tannins yet soft, rounded, very focused with wonderful minerality. A very naturally produced wine, unchilled with no filtration that will cellar for up to 10 years. Given the price, you would expect to pay easily $50 plus however it is barely half of that. Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years.
  • Septimo Dia Malbec 2009 06/23/11 NZD $29.95 NZD $27.95
Another clear example of why Argentina is producing the very best Malbec in the world. From Mendoza, a region situated at a very high altitude above sea level therefore producing very low yields and very natural wines. In the true style of Malbec, it has soft supple tannins with great concentration, minerality and high expression. The 2009 is another very good vintage even though vintages in Mendoza do no vary that much because of its topography. Excellent with grilled steaks, sausages and also pastas. Drink now or cellar for 5-6 years.
  • Finca El Peral Chardonnay 2010 03/23/11 NZD $23.95 NZD $21.95
It has a subtle and transparent golden yellow colour with brilliant greenish and silvery hues. Aromas of ripe fruit such as melon, peach, pear and pineapple with hints of caramel and honey. It is delicate and elegant, very fruity, soft and amiable, pleasant and buttery. Its aromas altogether make it sensual and refined.
  • Finca El Peral Sauvignon Blanc 2010 03/23/11 NZD $23.95 NZD $19.95
A complete breakaway from the usual tutiy fruity Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc style. This is drier, crispier with more flinty and clean overtones. Although it is also made to be drunk relatively young, it is a wine that will also improve for 2-3 years. It displays very good depth, vibrancy and complexity. A lot more full bodied than what you would expect from the local Sauvignon Blanc, also a more weighty palate with a longer finish and very well balanced.

San Juan

  • Don Baltazar Chardonnay Viognier 2005 01/26/10 NZD $11.95 NZD $10.95 Out of Stock
Combining the two varieties in a unique and anthological mix: fresh and fine aromas of exotic fruits of the Chardonnay and those of the Viognier. A lovely dry aromatic and minerally wine which for lovers of Chablis it will go down very well, though it still has very good upfront fruit with depth and minerality and finishing flinty and crisp. It is an excellent complement of white meats, fresh sea products, rices and young cheeses.

It has an intense violet and blue berry fruits bouquet, on the palate is full body with profound concentration and richness, clean and vibrant with superb acidity, beautiful balance of subtle tannins and fruit freshness. At the price is just incomparable, you could pay $30 plus for a wine of this quality and you wouldn’t complain. You should get yourself a few bottles to drink with the “Asados” and tell your friends you’ve paid $30, they’ll believe you. Excellent with steaks and barbecues.
  • Mayu Syrah 2006 04/23/09 NZD $26.95 NZD $24.95 Out of Stock
