Septima Chardonnay Semillon 2010
NZD $18.95 NZD $16.95
153146
This fantastic new import hails from the Mendoza region of Argentina. A relatively small producer, Septima are known more for their Cabernet and Malbec varieties. This wonderful little blend consists of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Semillon. It displays a pale yellow colour with aromas of citrus, apple and tropical fruit such as pineapple. On the palate it is wonderfully fruity while remaining very fresh and balanced with a silkiness and volume to it that comes from the Semillon. Drink now or cellar for another 2-3 years, this wine is capable of maintaining its qualities. Drink with fish, chicken or even on its own.

Septima Tempranillo 2010
NZD $19.95 NZD $18.95
153646
We mentioned that some of you will be familiar with Septima for their outstanding Malbec, however we didn’t know that their best wine is not actually the Malbec, but this Tempranillo! We have tried this against some good Spanish Rioja and surprisingly, it was better. Seriously, we couldn’t believe how good it is within its price bracket. Full bodied with aromas of leather, smoke and paprika with a rich and ample middle palate, concentration, depth and balance are all here. Quite remarkable that a wine of this quality could be below the $20 mark, this will also cellar for another 3-4 years.

Septima Noche Pinot Noir 2008
NZD $53.95 NZD $44.95
153310
Septima Noche literally translated means Seventh Night. This is a deviation from what you would come to expect from Mendoza in Argentina where Malbec is the king. A robust, concentrated Pinot Noir that is probably more the style of a Burgundy than the Kiwi type, savoury and ripe with ample and rich middle palate, a beautiful expression of its varietal that will also cellar for the next 4-5 years. Something distinctive that you should make a point of trying.

Septima Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
NZD $19.95 NZD $16.95
153117
The plummy soft mouthfilling fruit of the Malbec comes together in perfect harmony with the firmer tannins, acidity and minty aromas of the Cabernet Sauvignon to create a wine that is marvelously concentrated. The short aging time in oak barrels has joined all the components seamlessly and added a delicious toasty chocolatey flavor that lingers on the finish. This is a big wine with a lot of class. Drink now or cellar for 2-3 years.

Septima Gran Reserva Malbec 2009
NZD $51.95 NZD $48.95
153216
As I said before this is the kind of wine that you can expect nowadays from Argentina, the Gran Reserva is very much based in the Spanish model of ageing longer in oak when this is required. Handpicked parcels from the best vineyard sites, sorted and double sorted in the winery then given an extra hot ferment, the result is an extremely full body and intense wine with absolute focus, minerality and pinpoint accuracy. We have tried this against some very fancy Bordeaux at well over the $100 mark, it was revealing, it took about 4-5 hours for the wine to come out but when it did… well… just magnificent! For those that enjoy full body super charge yet balanced wine, this is for you.

Septima Malbec 2010
NZD $21.95 NZD $18.95
153118
Another example of what Argentina is doing with this grape variety, they really have become the masters at it. Even countries such as Spain and Italy where they are head and shoulders above the rest are finding it difficult to make wines of this quality at the price. A full body wine with intensity and power, yet very elegant and balanced, depth, structure, complexity, everything is here. Quite remarkable for a wine around the $20 mark to have so much on offer. An array of mocha, smoke and old leather with sensational middle palate focus and purity, it is the sort of stuff that you expect from something around the $50 + mark. You’ll enjoy this, why bother with pretenders?
-
Septima Syrah 2010
NZD $19.95 NZD $18.95
153645
Some of you will be familiar with this Bodegas for offering excellent Malbec. However it doesn’t stop there, this Syrah’s style is pretty much along the lines of a Cotes du Rhone in being peppery, with hints of black olive and tappinade, medium to full bodied with lifted upfront fruit. Perfectly balanced with excellent texture, although a little young at the moment it will age beautifully over the next few years. So for lovers of good Cotes du Rhone or New Zealand Syrah, this is for you.
