Septima Gran Reserva Malbec 2008
NZD $51.95 NZD $48.95
153216
As I said before this is the kind of wine that you can expect nowadays from Argentina, the Gran Reserva is very much based in the Spanish model of ageing longer in oak when this is required. Handpicked parcels from the best vineyard sites, sorted and double sorted in the winery then given an extra hot ferment, the result is an extremely full body and intense wine with absolute focus, minerality and pinpoint accuracy. We have tried this against some very fancy Bordeaux at well over the $100 mark, it was revealing, it took about 4-5 hours for the wine to come out but when it did… well… just magnificent! For those that enjoy full body super charge yet balanced wine, this is for you.

Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2006
NZD $52.95
152982
Since its insertion at the beginning of the 1980s, Cloudy Bay with the expert advice of Cape Mentelle and the distribution power of Veuve Clicquot, they have gained a foothold on the international markets. It has been a benchmark for the New Zealand wine industry in particular for the production of their Sauvignon Blanc. Their Chardonnay is expressive, concentrated and rich with a display of terroir which is perhaps unequal in New Zealand. What we like about this particular wine is that it combines great expression of vineyard site, varietal characteristics which are distinctly new world but it also goes further with its mineral notes, racy acidity and palate weight which are trademarks of a good white Burgundy. Drink now or cellar for 3-4 years.

Ma Maison Chardonnay 2008
NZD $52.95 NZD $46.95

This is one of the up and coming stars in Martinborough that has been able to capture the essence of true Chardonnay. For lovers of white Burgundy, in particular Mersault, you will find it very familiar. Made from a small holding of mainly Mendoza clone Chardonnay with an abundant aroma of white peach, melon and nectarine and left on its lees for an extended period of time but not stirred which gives it a bottle fermented Champagne character. Full malolactic is given to the wine with no fining or filtration resulting in a creamy, soft and well balanced texture with lovely acidity, focus and accuracy. Frankly one of the very best Chardonnay’s that we’ve come across in the last few years. Will also cellar for another 3-5 years.

Egon Muller Scharzhof Riesling Qualitatswein 2007
NZD $53.95 NZD $49.95
Out of Stock
153152
Egon Muller is internationally known for producing cutting edge Riesling. This particular one is low on alcohol with outstanding minerality and purity. It is one of those wines that offers the best of both worlds, very attractive when youthful however capable of aging as well. Pure, expressive, lively and racy. This wine is very good value in that it is very pure and fine. 9.5% alcohol Pale of hue with gentle green hints; a warm and attractive nose, lazy spring blossom and soft green aromas, then, as is a characteristic of this House, a palate of great intensity and precision, slate and fruit from the lime grove. Drink now or cellar for up to 7-8 years.

His flagship label from a single vineyard that expresses the essence of superb Method Sparkling. A blend of 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Meunier and aged for 4 years of yeast lees. This is just sensational, lots of fruit, strawberries, marzipan, nutmeg, wild berries with lots of concentration, excellent middle palate and terrific bubbles. If your budget doesn’t allow for a top Rose Champagne, this is a great substitute.

Septima Noche Pinot Noir 2008
NZD $53.95 NZD $44.95
153310
Septima Noche literally translated means Seventh Night. This is a deviation from what you would come to expect from Mendoza in Argentina where Malbec is the king. A robust, concentrated Pinot Noir that is probably more the style of a Burgundy than the Kiwi type, savoury and ripe with ample and rich middle palate, a beautiful expression of its varietal that will also cellar for the next 4-5 years. Something distinctive that you should make a point of trying.

Simon Bize Savigny-les-Beaune Blanc 2003
NZD $53.95 NZD $51.95
112464
Even thought this appellation is mostly known for the production of red wine, Simon Bize also owns small parcels producing outstanding white wines made from 100% Chardonnay. This particular one is from an elevated enclave which is non irrigated and extremely low cropping. Minimal handling and interference with the wine has always been the philosophy of Simon Bize. Wild yeast ferment follows pressing of the wine with minimal intervention to produce a wonderful expression of its terroir, a bouquet of baked Brioche, dry nuts following with a clean and high acidity on the palate that emphasizes structure and concentration yet very lean and elegant interlinked with minerals and stone dust, great purity and expression. Will cellar for 5 years plus.

Marques de Riscal Reserva 2006
NZD $54.95 NZD $49.95
153430
This Bodegas has been established in 1858. A pioneering winery in Rioja that goes back to the time when phylloxera devastated most of the French vineyards. Made from Tempranillo, Graciano and Mathuelo, exclusively from vines over 15 years of age. Strict harvesting by hand and aged for over 2 years which it must do by law, the wine is medium to full bodied with smoky and leather characteristics with hints of balsamic, soft, round tannins which make it ideal for having with chorizos, jamon serrano and game. Starting to drink very well now but can be cellared with confidence for the next 10 years plus.

Chateau Lanessan 2000
NZD $54.95 NZD $49.95

"Delicious, complex effort, the fully mature 2000 Lanessan offers notes of cedarwood, plums, loamy soil, and damp earth, medium to full body, plenty of spice, and a classic Bordeaux personality. It should drink well for another 7-10 years. Drink 2010-20" Robert Parker (June 2010)

Simon Bize Savigny-les-Beaune "Les Bourgeots" 2000
NZD $54.95 NZD $49.95

Having tried this the other day after about a year, I had forgotten how good it was, it really is what you expect from a top Burgundy, on the nose the perfume was exuberant, violets, lavender and spring flowers everywhere. Drinking very well now, lovely acidity with lots of truffles, superb middle palate, broad with outstanding purity and focus. Drinking well now but will keep improving for 2-3 years.
