Pleasant Valley Merlot Cabernet Franc 2006
NZD $21.95 NZD $18.95
153008
Pleasant Valley Red All This came on a St. Emilion tasting which was thrown in purely by chance and we really didn't have a clue where it was from, in fact none of us picked it as being from New Zealand and when we looked at the price definitely not from Waiheke, it was far to cheap to be from there. Cabernet Franc is not the easiest grape to ripen and not the easiest grape to grow either that's why we didn't think that it would be from New Zealand. It really exhibits a wonderful perfume of dry earth and truffle, great acidity, pure and yet still concentrated. Lovely richness and succulent with an array of wild berries but still very well integrated, vibrant, fresh with excellent finish, this is really equal to many $40-$50 wines out there. Enjoy now or over the next 3-4 years.

NZD $21.95 NZD $19.95

This is one of those varieties that has been around as long as the Roman Empire. It was always over looked, over worked, over cropped, in fact it wasn’t really treated very nicely. However the modern versions that some producers are making are a complete transformation. Almost black inky colour loaded with wild flowers, herbs and dry fruits, it’s expressive, juicy and succulent yet clean, vibrant and fresh, it’s not sweet or jammy and an excellent vintage which is drinking very well now however will also keep for another few years. Ideal for the BBQ, roast etc.

NZD $21.95 NZD $19.95

Bodegas Garci Grande has 200 acres of vineyards on Rueda’s gravelly, dry plateau near the historic town of Valladolid in the southern part of the zone. Garci Grande is made from a blend of 50% Verdejo and 50% Viura. The Verdejo grape has been grown in the Rueda region for over centuries. Its origins date back to the 11th century. Viura was introduced in the 1950’s, when Verdejo wasn’t appreciated on its own. No oak as it doesn’t need it, it offers an array of minerals, green figs and cashew nuts, full body with crisp and racy acidity, freshness and concentration. This is the sort of wine that over delivers for its price, versatile, good on its own and even better with food. If you haven’t tried it, you should because at the price they don’t come any better.
