  • Castellare di Castellina I Sodi di San Niccolo 2013 NZD $139.95 NZD $119.95
    154879
“The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. This wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels too weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red. - Monica Larner” -- 96/100 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate... more »
  • Castellare di Castellina Chianti Classico 2016 NZD $49.95 NZD $39.95
    154879
There is Chianti and there is Chianti… but this is super Chianti Classico! Old fashioned with wonderful saline flavours, medium to full-bodied with aromas of prosciutto, cypress and dry meats. When we said there is Chianti and there is Chianti, we mean this is the true classical style being dry, high acidity, beautifully perfumed, lovely balance and almost seductive, once you try it you always go back to it!... more »
  • Dry River Craighall Riesling 2017 NZD $56.95 NZD $49.95
    154872
“To achieve ripe flavours, soft tannins with an energetic acidity requires rigid vineyard management and multiple stage picking passes. The early picks of ‘clean’ fruit relied on the above and the maximum amount of sunlight ‘harvested’. The denser and more tropical flavours and aromatics depend on longer vineyard hang time, and therefore will be exposed to higher risk due to the changing weather. The result of the 2017 Riesling is nothing short of stunning, and a testament to the hard work by our vineyard team. White peach, ripe floral notes and mineral freshness show a dynamic between power and restraint. Rose’s Lime cordial, hints of nougat with orange and mandarin flesh and fennel and clove spices, would almost suggest this is Pinot Gris. At the same time, it is unmistakably Riesling. A small amount of residual sugar, five grams/litre, offers an appropriate entrance for the tropical fruit like pineapple, and even mango. So much of this wine is texture though. A voluptuous densely packed palate with texture and fruit weight makes a real statement. A friendly acidity salivates and draws the attention to the mid palate. Here, orange and grapefruit rind with citrus fruit dominate their space. The distinct linear acidity builds the palate up to a seamless long finish. Expect this wine to cellar well in a good cellar, best to drink after four to seven years.”... more »
  • Dry River Lovat Gewurztraminer 2017 NZD $56.95 NZD $49.95
    154871
“Due to a long “hang” time in the vineyard this year, we see recognisable hallmarks of ripe Gewürztraminer; rose petals, lychee, mandarin and grapefruit rind. Since our aim is to produce a full bodied wine with a high aromatic density, yet a restraint and elegance, we generally make several picks through this vineyard at different ripening times. The last picking pass was with a high portion of Botrytis infected fruit, which is showcased by clover honey, candied ginger, Turkish delight and linalool. With the dense and ripe aromatics on display on the nose, the palate is surprisingly more light weight with a lower residual sugar than usual, 17 grams/litre. The consequence of this is a gentle entrance. However, the wine spreads fast and evenly, covering the complete palate with a friendly and buoyant mouthfeel. Good “housekeeping” is the playful threesome interaction between the fruit weight, the density and acidity. The latter keeps the wine fresh, alive and allows for a long and linear finish. This wine can be enjoyed young, or after five to eight years for added complexity.”... more »
  • Dry River Pinot Gris 2017 NZD $64.95 NZD $58.95
    154870
“The defining influences that typify our Pinot Gris are, like always, vineyard related. No irrigation, high exposure to sunshine and small berries contribute and guarantee a base standard of deep concentration, structure and texture. Timing of picking is late, mid- to late April, and for the 2017 vintage the above were fundamental to this aromatic wine and avoided any lingering dilution. The fresh and lively aromatics form an interesting mix, where balance and restraint are key fundamentals of this wine. This year the wild flowers form the lively aspect and are the most noticeable, apple and orange blossoms provide the fresh characteristics. The nose is further filled with crushed apple, golden kiwi fruit and nashi pear. We were able to reduce the residual sugar levels for this vintage, this assists the refined palate in showing a little more minerality. As for the nose, the palate shows dense and transparent flavours of stone fruit and peach, with a gracious and unpretentious attitude. Part of the wine has been matured in French oak for 10 months, on lees. This helped to accentuate the length of the wine and bring more charm to the textural elements and pave a path for the fruit to shine. We predict this wine to evolve for the next three to five years and bring drinking pleasure for several years to follow.”... more »
  • Dry River Pinot Noir 2016 NZD $96.95 NZD $89.95
    154869
“The 2016 vintage was our driest growing year in recent wine cultivation history. Fruit set was above average, and combined with good heat accumulation the resulting wine certainly shows ample concentration. Care was exercised in maintaining yield, approximately four tonnes/ha, and vigilant winegrowing techniques enabled ripening of what I consider to be a classic and refined Dry River Pinot Noir. Immediately red currant, strawberries and plum fruit deliver an aromatic hit. Though primary red fruit are visibly dominant, there is more to be found; Christmas spices, rosehip and floral notes like lilies and freshly cut hay are the more obvious characters that we see. The supporting role of the oak intensifies the underlying tobacco and caramel notes. The palate shows a youthful intensity with a tendency to speak with great clarity. However, another more serene voice commands the fruit to spread out and surrender to the maze of tannins and juicy acidity that ascends from underneath. They bring a degree of order and longevity through their ripe phenolic compounds. The restrained power and silky, linear tannins are strikingly intricate and invite further examination. Like most of our Pinot noirs, the 2016 wine requires three to five years additional evolution for optimum drinking pleasure.”... more »
  • Marc Bredif Vouvray 2004 NZD $64.95
    154867
"A classic vintage in the Loire Valley with a long, slow ripening season and an abundant crop. For sweet Chenins, 2004 is perhaps overshadowed by the super-concentrated and short ‘03’s and the benchmark ‘05’s. Nevertheless, some excellent wines were made which should age well." -- 4 stars, Very Good. Michael Broadbent... more »

  • Ata Rangi McCrone Pinot Noir 2014 NZD $98.95 NZD $89.95
    154846
Ata Rangi's McCrone Vineyard was originally established by our team for friends Don and Carole McCrone who also grow Pinot Noir for leading Oregon producer Ken Wright Cellars. By 2001, when this 6-acre vineyard was planted, we had 20 years of Pinot experience and were able to choose clones and trellising styles that we considered consistently top performing. Unlike our own vineyard soil profiles, the McCrone site just around the corner in Regent St has a smattering of clay within the gravels. The cooling effect of this clay delivers a distinctively different aroma and flavour profile than that of the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir, even with vine age taken into account. The 2014 is the fifth release from this single site. Bottled in August 2015 this wine has been allowed to slowly evolve prior to release two years on. A bolder style than our flagship Pinot Noir, the nose offers a depth of rich spicy notes with a hint of manuka flower. It opens on the palate with a big swell of flavor supported by fine, velvety tannins. The finish is juicy and complex, with an evolution of flavours into a more savoury, umami style.... more »
  • Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2016 NZD $61.95 NZD $52.95
    112288
Hunting Hill is a vineyard that was first planted in 1982 and became a significant part of the original Kumeu River Chardonnay blend. Occupying the slope overlooking Maté’s Vineyard, it has always contributed lovely ripe and rich fruit to the Estate Chardonnay. Hunting Hill was replanted in 2000 and is now even better than before, giving beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive, mealy minerality. This wine has fragrant lemon/lime blossom aromas on the nose that typify the lovely perfume we always get from Hunting Hill. The class of this vineyard shows through in 2016 where conditions were not always perfect. The fruit from Hunting Hill was clean with beautiful flavours that has come through in the finished wine with a supple texture an lingering finish. As with previous vintages of Hunting Hill we expect this to drink well for 6 – 8 years.... more »
