Septima Malbec 2010
NZD $21.95 NZD $18.95
153118
Another example of what Argentina is doing with this grape variety, they really have become the masters at it. Even countries such as Spain and Italy where they are head and shoulders above the rest are finding it difficult to make wines of this quality at the price. A full body wine with intensity and power, yet very elegant and balanced, depth, structure, complexity, everything is here. Quite remarkable for a wine around the $20 mark to have so much on offer. An array of mocha, smoke and old leather with sensational middle palate focus and purity, it is the sort of stuff that you expect from something around the $50 + mark. You’ll enjoy this, why bother with pretenders?

Don’t know how these people do it but they certainly do. This is from Puglia, the heel of Italy right in the very south. In the tradition of Negroamaro, it is soft, juicy and velvety with masses of dark berry fruit yet with soft velvety tannins, distinctive and very expressive of its variety. Blueberries, cassis and spiciness with gentle tannins and medium to full bodied. The perfect combination for pasta, meat or strong cheeses.

Marchesi Spinola Barolo 2000
NZD $79.95 NZD $74.95
Out of Stock
152560
We have been able to get a superb deal on this Barolo and as we have said before, it is not easy to get great Barolo at great prices but this would be it. It is on par with many classified growths from Bordeaux and on some occasions even better. It is said that Barolo is the king of wines and the wine for kings, there is a lot of truth in that. From the area of Piedmont in the North of Italy bordering Switzerland where the Nebiolo grape which it is made from has been cultivated for centuries. This particular wine is just outstanding. It is a traditional Barolo which is made in a relatively modern winemaking style. The wine is big and fat with enormous depth and concentration yet it remains focused, clean and pure. Starting to drink now but will also cellar for 7-8 years plus.

The Conterno family have been producing this outstanding wine for over 5 generations. These wines are on par with any second and indeed first growths from Bordeaux and we are talking about Chateau Lafite, Chateau Latour and Chateau Margaux etc but at a 1/3 of the price. The 2001 vintage is outstanding, it marks the last great run of vintages from 1996 to 2001. This producer is able to capture the true essence of Nebbiolo as rarely seen before. There is only one way to describe this wine, that is superlative, outstanding, big, generous and vinerous. Ageing was done in Slavonian oak followed by 12 months of bottle age before release. This is classic Barolo, tobacco, earth, star anise, dry flowers and mouth watering acidity with outstanding purity and minerality. Will cellar for 10 years plus.
