From this very small region of Bierzo just north of the Duero Valley, Northwest of Spain, this grape variety has been grown for centuries with in many cases, lacklustre results however in recent years with more hillside plantings and serious vineyard management it has expelled that myth. This is an extremely affordable wine, some of the biggest players in Spain are moving to the area and making absolute gems which are extraordinarily priced. The wine is weighty, with ripe plums, racy acidity, concentration and lengthy middle palate. You could be forgiven for thinking that it was a top Burgundy. A little on the young side at the moment however very refreshing, attractive and just simply delicious to drink now but will also keep.

Pyramid Valley Hille Semillon 2006
NZD $46.95 NZD $42.95
153284
Again same philosophy, same care, same love applied here. Whole bunch pressed, natural yeast fermentation in French oak. We believe that a little Sauvignon Blanc has been added but this would be minute. Yellow straw colour with a bouquet of dry herbs, toast and candid marmalade. This is a broad, concentrated and full bodied wine however again beautifully balanced, focused and lovely purity. A wine that will drink fantastically for the next 3-4 years but very rewarding now in its youth because of its freshness and glorious generosity. For anyone who has not tried first class Semillon, this is it!

Pyramid Valley 'Eaton Family Vineyard' Pinot Noir 2007
NZD $77.95 NZD $69.95
152913
Pyramid Valley have very quickly carved an enviable reputation both nationally and internationally, their wines are mostly single vineyard. The vineyards themselves are hilly, densely planted with unique soil compositions including clay-limestone, in essence perfect terroir to grow world class Pinot Noir. We have added below the review from Stephen Tanzer in the International Wine Cellar: "Good full red. Sappy aromas of red cherry, strawberry, blood orange, graphite and spices. Densely packed and sweet, with an urgent, sappy quality to the lush red fruit and licorice flavors. A fairly full and pliant style with excellent stuffing. Finishes with suave tannins and excellent length." 91 points

Valiano Poggio Teo Chianti Classico 2001
NZD $49.95
152716
Poggio Teo originates from slope of the hill to the same name, in a typical Tuscan landscape like a little corner of paradise where time seem to stand still. What distinguishes one high quality wine from another is the land: the composition of the soil and sub soil, the microclimate, exposure to the sun and so on. This is what modern Chianti is all about, powerful and concentrated but still typical Chianti with lovely salty aromas, dry and leathery. Chianti is another region that in the last 15 years it bounced back with a vengeance and at $39.95 it offers unbeatable value. Drink now or over the next 5 years.

Also from the hill of the boot of Italy, Puglia but a blend of the two classical grape varieties of this region, Negroamaro and Primitivo. Again showing wonderful structure and an abundance of ripe berry fruit with very soft tannins. Savoury with a hint of spice and game. Beautifully rounded with ample middle palate and lovely concentration. Again perfect with game, strong cheeses or red meats.

Uruco Malbec 2008
NZD $29.95 NZD $27.95
153425
When it comes to great Malbec, Mendoza is second to none. This is another example of a very full bodied wine with great concentration and poise. Big tannins yet soft, rounded, very focused with wonderful minerality. A very naturally produced wine, unchilled with no filtration that will cellar for up to 10 years. Given the price, you would expect to pay easily $50 plus however it is barely half of that. Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years.

A. Chauvet Brut Non Vintage
NZD $49.95 NZD $44.95

Most of you will know that in terms of value for money, this is as good as it gets! A Champagne of this quality doesn't always come at this price. Basically it delivers the quality of many other Champagnes at double the price, made from a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blend from the Tour-sur-Marne (very close to Laurent Perrier) that has been aged on its lees, giving it a nutty, yeasty, and light citrus flavour. The delicate finish is crisp and dry with a lingering acidity. A wonderful wine that is best served well chilled. You could even add a dash of Cassis or Frambois to make a refreshing apéritif.
